Truck Slightly overheating...
Hello, My name is Michael. I have a 2001 Tundra and recently am receiving a mind boggling error. I would appreciate any help I can get.
If I drive the car with the cold air on. Either A\C or just cold air without the A\C, the car heat gauge starts to go up after about 20 miles of driving it gets to 3\4 gauge. I took it to a mechanic and they stuck a scanner on it to test the heat controler. They said that the center gauge which is usually where it runs is 218 degrees. After driving for about 20 miles with the cold air on it gets up to 230 degrees. Have yet to see it higher than that but don't want it to either. After seeing it go up I turn on the heater and it will drop back to 218 within 3 minutes... So the heater core seems to be working really good. The Mechanic I took it to changed the thermostat as well as flushed the radiator out and did a leakdown check of the cylinders to check and see if it was a head gasket. After all of this was done nothing is fixed. Everything is still the exact same. I don't want to start throwing parts at it as I don't have tons of money to do this. Does anyone have any clue what is going on? Any help would be appreciated!!! Last edited by mike_skoges : 06-19-2008 at 06:09 PM. |

I was reading elsewhere and it said that the fan clutch may be going as well. They also said to test this you should let the truck warm up and shut the truck off while having someone watch the fan. I did this and the fan shut off immediately. That is what they said you should check for. If the fan continues to spin than it could be the clutch but if it shuts off immediately it probably isn't the clutch. Any ideas about this?

About the only other things to check are if the water pump is pushing properly( the impeller may be deteriorating), if the radiator has any blockage, there may be hot and cool spots in it. When they did the leakdown and all of that did they do a block test for exuast fumes in the coolant? If the head gasket is just starting to blow a leakdown will not show much but if you test for exhuast fumes in the coolant it will give you a much better test.

They checked the exhaust as well as hooked a unit to the radiator and pumped it to test if there was some fluid in the head gaskets... They all passed the tests... So, If there a way to check the water pump or do you have to take it out to check it? Also, did I check the fan clutch right or not? What would you suggest to check first?
