Mick has had pretty good luck with that from the sounds of it. My dealer has not heard of Toyoguard. So I am starting to think, it is just what the dealer is calling it since they all seem to have a 5 year warrenty.
Yep, that sounds like the same thing. I asked them about waxing and they said no need to wax. However nothing was mentioned about waxing voiding the warranty so I will have to check up on that. They basically described it as a clear coat which will protect the paint. The had a display on the floor room of a hood where one side was treated and one side was not. They took a rattle can and sprayed it, waited a minute to let it dry, and than wiped the spray paint off. It is pretty cool, but I am not worried spray paint, I am worried about scratches.

Yes.... before you purchase it, I would definitely look into what the warranty does not cover.

I was told the same thing at the time of purchase. I did go ahead and get it. My truck is covered with scratches(only has 1,400 miles). NOW, the dealer says that it only protects against UV rays. I suggest you have them explain to you exactly what it is, as they might be offing something differant than what I have. Mine is usless and a total rip-off.

Toyota's Response...

I just emailed Toyota about my problems:

My Email
--------------------------
Dear Toyota.

Thank you for your email, and I don't know why your feedback page did not
work.

A week or two ago I received a marketing phone call to find out how my
first Toyota purchase went. I reported that everything is great, EXCEPT
for, what I believe is, a serious problem model wide with the Toyota Tundra
paint.

My Tundra (a 5.7 Limited CrewMax) is black, and it appears as though there
has only been one coat of paint applied. No clear coat, no multiple layers
for protection, even with the Toyoguard paint protection option, I have
observed:

1. Within the first week and my first wash there were very fine scratch
marks in the paint. Having had several black vehicles before including BMW,
Audi and Nissan - non have scratched like that in the first 2-3 years,
despite being EXTREMELY careful washing (the usual rinse first and thorough
sudding).

2. In the first week, I also purchased a Toyota bedmat for the truck.
Having installed the mat, and then finding out that the shortbed version
didn't fit the crewmax, I pulled the bedmat out (its extremely heavy and
cannot just be lifted). There were several scratches down to the white
primer.

3. Having purchased a hard tonneau cover (a Lear 700) for the truck, I
locked it for the first time in the second week. My keys touched the
Tundras paint on the drop down door, and scratched it, again down to the
primer. There was no pressure put on the keys, simply them against the
paint as I turned the lock.

4. Simply climbing in and out of the truck in a tight spot, meant that my
sneaker chipped a piece of the paint off the edge of the door.

The problems I'm facing are not simply with me, they appear to be model
wide as I started a small petition to gauge whether it was me (and I've had
several cars and NON have had these problems). The petition shows (and it's
only on 2 toyota forums and been going for only a month), that there is a
clear problem in Canada and the US.

2007 & 2008 Toyota Tundra's Paint Quality Petition | FRIENDSITE - the FREE Social Networking Site for Friends!

It makes interesting reading...

Whilst everything else in the truck is fantastic. I
am severely disappointed in the quality of paint for what is supposed to be
a work truck, 2 other friends have now purchased other vehicles based upon
the quality of paint on the truck.

Please can you advise?

Angry Paper Mishe Paint

They are saying "you bought it, now its on you".

Do you have any idea the cost to repaint a truck this size, on your dime?

Sit down before you ask a body shop.

My Crewmax paint is so bad that I have to touch up bottom of body of door due to as dealer put it"your shoes are rubbing off paint when you get out of truck".

ALL doors need touch up cause paint is coming off with the opening and closing of doors.

Am I p***d off, you bet! I live in humid HOUSTON. This truck will rust earlier and look like crap in 3 years due to touch ups and poor paint.

I see a lawsuit coming in a year or two due to paint, just like the sludge in the engines a few years back.

You could take it to a reputable body shop (or 2) and get their .02 on the paint. Use them as references. Then, it's not just "Joe Schmo the angry Tundra owner," you'll have them backing you up.

Well, I just got back from talking with the Toyota rep.... man am I frustrated... He agreed that I had scratches, but he said since they are from an external source, that it is not Toyota's problem. He said since the paint is not pealing off, bubbling or falling off, it is not a warranty problem with the paint. He said the warranty does not cover paint durability problems. He asked if I took it to a car wash, and I told him no I have only hand washed it. He said uhmmm…. then I ask if he ever takes his Tundra to a car wash, and he said….no… it will scratch it. I was pissed, he would not take it to the paint shop to get their opinion. He would not take it to an independent paint shop for their option. Even if I did take it to an independent paint shop, they would not accept their findings. I said how can you just look at the paint and say it is not a defect in the painting/clear coating process. I said you are not a professional paint person, so how can you make that determination. He said that the scratches are from some external source and that is enough to make that determination. I said so the rain is an external source (it is raining today), so if the rain caused a scratch, then that is acceptable to Toyota. He said basically yes…. that is an external source and if there was dirt or debris in the rain and it scratched the paint that is an external source. He said several times, we do not warranty for durability issues including scratching and chipping. Since that is from an external source…… I am pissed!

Oh... I let him know that his reasons were crap, but Toyota does not care what I have to say. They are only listening to their so called reps. No professional inspections... just listen to the rep that can stand 5 feet away from the truck and say.... this is from an external source, and I say this is not a warranty issue.
