Tailgate Probelms

I filled up the bed of my truck with some lumber to build a wooden fence at home, once I got home the tailgate WOULD NOT OPEN. Funny thing with it was that no lumber was creating pressure on the tailgate (and it wasn't locked). I'm going to take my truck to dealer since it's under warranty, but has anyone else has had similar issues with their tailgate?

Wow, no problems like that here 4X, keep us posted on what you find out though. That's sweet you can close up the tailgate loaded up with lumber!

Take the tailgate cover off and reconnect the clip on the end of the latch rod. Mine did this once and hasn't happened again.

So what in your opinion do you think caused it to do that?

My guess is that the cable got tangled on the hook. Since, happydayz said the tailgate cover comes off I'm giving it a shot

I think it was never fully locked in place. After opening and closing it, several times, finally came off completely. Once I figured it out it wasn't a big deal. I happened to have the right bit, with me, for the screws and once the cover was off it was easy to see the problem. I have heard of a few others having this happen too.

Good Luck! I hope I was able to help you out. It's kinda wierd when the tailgate won't open on a new truck. I thought it was locked, then I thought the cables were jammed, and I have to admit I got a little rough with trying to force it open. That's when I found my solution and I didn't even wreck anything. Life is good when you don't break stuff! LOL

Glad to see you found the fix. Imagine you had to get a star bit. I had mines from the 70's when I worked at a ch**y dealer.

UPDATE: I ended up taking the truck to the dealer and was told that Toyota put out a PART NOTICE MEMO on this, NOT A RECALL THOUGH . I was explained the the stock lock assembly and TSB laches are malfunctioning and need replacement. So I'm getting them fixed tommorrow.

Bro, it would be a good idea if you were to post that information as a new Thread. Good stuff man!

Tailgate clip on Tundra 07

Just inherited an 07 Tundra and thought I was an idiot because I couldn't open the tailgate.

Thankfully people at this site helped me and I found a broken clip at the end of the pull rod. I had two wonderful Toyotas in the early 90's before I moved on to German cars and I was VERY DISAPPOINTED to see four such tiny piece of plastic, that will break everytime it gets cold or pop off everytime I hit a Massachusetts pothole, holding the bars to the latches. Good thing the truck wasn't full of stuff and I could take the panel off. If Toyota doesn't have a real fix Im going to rebuild myself with a new bar with a completely closed and bolted ends like should have been done in the first place.

I wish the Germans made pickup trucks. I have a Mercedes Benz G500 made in Austria and the thing is indestructable!

Anyway, I will consult this site when I have problems (or come up with a nice fix)
