My father in law is a farmer over in CA and he said that the farmers like the Tundra and of cause they don't have any rust problems.
This is only something you will get where you have real winters!

Anyone with the running boards or the step tubes looked if they have this problem??

I don't know where it ends!
Yesterday I found another bad place where my truck rusts: the driver side mirror!!!!
I write already "bad place" since I don’t even count the places like the screws/cable which hold the tail gate and all the little clips and screws under the truck on the frame!

You can see the spot on the first picture between the tree and the garage!

Well, I guess one more thing to take to court on Monday!

This is ridiculous for new trucks like this to rust. Im offically looking at other options for a new truck purchase. Tundra is still in the running but fading. I've never had rust problems and don't want them. Shame on Toyota.

We had our old Chevy pickup in Colorado last Thanksgiving, and we drove through some snow on I-25. I think the magnesium chloride salt they use on their highways is really corrosive -- it ate the chrome off of the new lug nuts and spinner covers I put on last summer. Now, they are all rusty looking and pitted. If we weren't selling Hal, I'd probably have to replace these parts. Luckily, we don't have to worry about road salt in Phoenix.

In retrospect, our relatives did tell us to wash the truck thoroughly as soon as we got out of the snow. Dang, I wish I had taken their advice. I didn't notice the rust until this spring, and it was too late.

Do most Tundra owners that are experiencing rust problems live in snow country? How about those in the southwest desert areas?

My guess is, that the rust problem on the surface is in the states where you have snow.
But my wifes Touareg is proof that the salt is not the sole problem: Her Touareg is a 5 years old with 3 times the miles and drove the same days as I drove the Tundra and guess what: NO rust!!

Since the Tundra's are only a year or less old, I don't think we reached to top of the rust problems.
Just look here: 95-00 tacoma rust buyback program - Toyota Forums :: Toyota Nation
Chances are, that this is not a Tacoma problem alone and the frame rust problem is a problem you find even in the "non rust" states!!

Yeah.... I put the chrome edging around my fender wells to prevent rock chips, and they are starting to show a little of that. In Montana, they use "magnesium chloride" on the streets for road deicer... and it eats up everything. I had purchased stainless steal for my 04 GMC because I thought that stainles steal would not rust. I was wrong... this deicer will cause most everything to rust. If they use magnesium chloride on your roads, that is the problem and not Toyota. No court will side with you.... trust me, they have had this is courts since they started using that crap up here. They have use it since (some time in the 80's), and are still using it today. Do a search on road deicer... you will find tons of stuff that looks just like yours. Good luck!

That is a good question, and I am not sure what the correct answer is. People have been arguing about this stuff for years up here. Most people want to blame the magnesium chloride...

I do know that all of my stainless steal started rusting from it... Chrome seems to take a little longer, but it to seems to rust from it after a while.

Well, if it would start after some years, I would say OK, but some trucks it shows up within the first 3 month, as you can read here on the forum.
It is very simple, the metal Toyota uses is substandard.
