Dealer oil changes...LOL

I guess these service managers are not real bright. I had my oil changed Fri on my 08 Tundra (only 800 miles) just because i always like to change oil early to get flashing/casting out since vehicle is new. Got the receipt ($38.55) for 8qts and filter change and you know it says Toyota specific 5w30...LOL

I am keeping the recipets just to take back and ask them if this is considered an alternative but i am not sweating it since i don't really want to pay $69 for a synthetic oil change. I never specified synthetic but i never "didn't" ask for it either - i guess i just figured they would used what the cap on the enginesays...LOL

Nah - oil is oil and 0w-20 is just a synthetic - nothing special. It will be 98 degree's here soon and 0w-20 won't do any better than 5w-30. I am going to call and speak to him just to make his day uncomfortable...LOL

This wasn't merely a service tech either - it is the service manager that i dealt with directly on Fri...

Which dealership Nukedog? Arlington? Keith Pierson? Ernie Palmer? Coggin? or Lighthouse Toyota? I get charged $78 with tax for Castrol synthetic.

I do my best to avoid that one. I never met the service people and that may not be fair to them, but I met those pushy salesman. Like I said before my wife did her research and wanted a Prius Hybrid. They didn't have one on the lot and this guy was trying to sell her a Corolla. She tells him No Prius No deal. He then tried to sell her a camary when I said that's enough let's go he wanted to sell me a scion. This guy was really sad to see.

I found the sticker they put on my window - and it says to use 5w-20....LOL

My salesman was great - Jackie Bowers - and the deal i got was very fair so i don't have any problem there.

Okay - page 555 in the owners manual states:

5.7 L V8 (3UR−FE) engine
SAE 5W−20 or 0W−20

SAE 5W−20 or 0W−20 engine oil may be
used. However, SAE 0W−20 is the best
choice for good fuel economy and good
starting in cold weather

oil

When I purchased the truck I took the salesman’s word the 5.7 used 5w-30.

I too, had the experience that the service department wanted to use this also. the manual states 5w-20 or 0w-20 and I made the choice to use easily available 5w-20 (non synthetic) that I use in a couple other vehicles.

From past experience, if you use a 5w-30 in an engine that wants 0w or 5w-20 you can easily lose mpg, rpm and have a totally different driving experience than what you should have.

I wonder if some other owners aren’t getting mileage below the predicted mileage for this reason? Especially with the apparent confusion about what oil goes in it at the dealerships. I took my own oil to the dealer.

This could be the reason for others hearing engine noises especially when cold.

I've been synthetic from the begining. Castrol is what the dealership uses. If it causes any problems they have the record/History of the truck and so do I.

Found out my delaership used the 5w20 Dino unless you request 0w20 Synthetic. The owners manual says it is good so i am fine. The girl at the counter just puts in 5w30 on all reciepts for oil cause she is a ditz...LOL

I've been recording my mileage since my truck was new. At 2000 miles I changed from the factory 0w-20 to 5w-20 dino oil and my mileage dropped 2.1 mpg. I changed back to 0w-20 at 5k and it went right back up 2.1 mpg. I wouldn't of believed it before I saw it. Oh, and though this test was done in cold northern Michigan, I ALWAYS preheat my engine below 32F, whether at home or at work.
If you consider 5k between oil changes and gas at $3.25 a gallon, 2 mpg saves me $112.85 per 5k miles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DEFINTELY worth the extra $ spent on the 0w-20.

i had the same thing happen to me nuke, i asked them after i saw the bill because it was so cheap compared to what i was expecting it to be, so i let it slide this time, but next time i am requesting the pure synthetic. it will be worth the 30 or so $ more.
