Thin paint :(

Hello Tundra Talk,

I'm new this is my first post. 08 DC Pyrite Mica (sp) 5.7 and lovin it except the scratches in my bed. I put 4 PLASTIC garbage cans in the bed and now I have about a hundred scrapes all over the bed. No big deal as soon as it warms a little I will put a spray in liner on it and I know you have to scuff the paint first before application. What I am getting at is, is the paint on the outter body just as thin as the bed? Anyone else had the problem on the 08?

There are a bunch of threads on this site regarding the thin paint issue. It appears that the Tundra does have some paint issues. However I have the same color truck you have and only have one scratch in it so far. I dropped the tailgate on my trailer jack to load something and it scratched it ever so slightly. I don't think the paint is any worse than any of the other brands out there right now.

bed scratched

My silver crewmax's bed is so scratched up after seeing how good my 4 wheeler would fit and only rolled it in there one time.
I put down some carpet in the bed to protect it, then plywood to protect the tailgate from bending (ridiculous I have to do that) and just the carpert rubbing on the paint scratched and scuffed it so bad, I will probably get a spray in liner. Also have scratches all over just from my shoes when standing in the bed putting my tonneau cover on.
Didn't want to go the route of spending the extra money on a spray in, was going to get just a rubber bedmat, but that would leave the tailgate unprotected. So for now looks like I will get a spray in.
I hope the rest of the paint is better than the bed!

I know people say it is a truck and the bed will get scratched, I just like to keep mine looking as new as possible for as long as possible.

my paint scratches easily also. Got a spray-in bedliner. Can't recommend that enough. I haven't had any problems with the tailgate. I was worried at first, reading some of the other posts on the forum. I've hauled 5 or 6 cords of wood now, my quad a couple of times, tile, rock, garbage, bricks, etc. I've stacked a couple hundred pounds of bricks (and wood) on the tail gate and then stood on it. So I figure about 500 lbs on the tail gate. NO PROBLEMS. I have a late production 07 tundra.

I have the 07 5.7 4x4 with the slate color. I have to agree with the thin paint issue. My Ford F150 paint never really had a scratch issue. I hauled rock and mulch mostly and never seen too many scuffs. Minor scratching only. I have recently hauled a roll of carpet and it scuffed the paint badly in the bed. Just touching the pait itself seem like they didn't clear coat it enough or something. I feel they cut costs a few things somewhere. The windshield is another. Rocks have hit my ford windshield and never left a mark. Two pebbles hit my Tundra's after left chips. I am really starting to question if I made the right choice w/ purchasing this truck.

the paint is easy to scratch because it is water based. Due to the wonderful EPA, all paints will be water based in the future :-(

I am also coming from a 2005 Ford f-150 and the paint was definetly better x10. As of now I am happy with my choice of new truck I hope I feel the same in 3 or 4 years.

Has anyone have a sealant on their Tundra? Mines came with a paint sealant as part of the XY7 Southeast Toyota Distributors Option.

Thumbs down Thin 2008 paint?

I hate to say it, but I agree with the Thin paint. I have had my 08 Tundra Double cab for 45 days, and I have small scratches showing up all over (Slate Matalic). I have only washed (by hand not at a car wash) my truck 3 times, and it has small scratches all over. The dealers are denying that they have an issue because I was told by the dealer, "This is the first time I have ever heard about this issue." Love the truck otherwise!

I've been thinking of getting the paint protection from ziebart. I think it is some sort of acrylic. Reading these paint problem thread makes me want to do it for sure.

Toyota is ahead and behind in this regard

Unfortunately, as of 2008, Toyota is the ONLY manufacture using poor quality water base paints.

I know from experience: 2007 Tundra, 6500 miles, and 2, yes 2, paint jobs (actually, 3 counting the original from the factory).

I scratched up my bed loading lumber in it. Wasn't worried about it. 2 Weeks later I put in 2 coats of Herculiner. Photo is in photo gallery. I do have 2 scratches thanks to Home Depot. Dang basket had sonar, backup camera, and GPS and found my truck parked on the outer end of the lot. It got my tailgate. I had my tailgate down with lumber in it.

Online Petition

I could do an online petition on my website FriendSite.com if you think there would be sufficient interest - I'm sure we could get the word spread out fast, get the media involved after sufficient respondents, and get Toyota to perhaps provide a product that fulfills its job, i.e. A HARD WORKING TRUCK, rather than something that been skimped on and scratches when you breath on it.

I'm sure the publicity would be good!

Why are the repaints using the same crappy paints from the factory? You'd think they would use the good stuff?
