i have more of an issue on the front, the back is just starting to show.

Dealer told me that i have to wait for the Area Rep to come in. As it's not that he doesn't want to help, and understands just that if Toyota wants to see the part, and doesn't agree with the change, the Dealer has to eat the cost of a new bumper(s) and install.

Appointment has bee scheduled....(later in Feb). Was told by the Service Manager not to touch so the Area Rep can see the exent...

Service Manger said that I was the first to bring this to his attention, while i was there, there was another Crewmax, SR5 that had the same issue. I brought this the Manager attention, so that was two in his shop, in one day.

It would be interesting to see where everyone comes form, maybe everyone can put this information in their profile.
So we can see if this is something releated to the north or if that happens all over the country!
Also pictures would help. For anyone who can't or don't know how to post them, send them to me at marc@mdwguns.com and I will post them for you or send you the link with instructions back.

Hey guys,

Maybe I don't understand the process of rust very well. But, if the rust can be wiped off, then how can it be coming from behind? Would that not just be surface rust?

I'm not trying to stir the pot, I'm sincerely trying to understand this. I guess the question is, where does rust come from? I always thought it started on the surface and if left untreated, it could eat into the metal. I remember having to wipe off surface rust on my '89 Toyota Truck years ago. I used to keep it waxed up. Are the bumpers any different now?

To be honest, I really don't like chrome anyway and I may end up having mine painted black just for the looks. I wish that was an option when I bought the truck.

I own a body shop......This looks very firmiliar. It may be metal that landed on your vehicle.....I had an owner of a vehicle that use to park near a train station and believe it or not the dust from the train friction settled on his vehicle and then started to rust. He thought it was his car rusting as well. My Detailer used clay magic.....it's a piece of clay made by 3M for such purposes. It takes off all contaminents including the top surface rust you see try it first before you let someone paint your vehicle for nothing!

Any one with this issue should bring this to the Dealers attention, so the word can get to the Area Rep who can 1. make a decision on the issue and 2. bring the issue to Toyota's attention.

NO rust on my truck yet and it has been really dirty for 2 weeks now, road grime, ice, dirt and any other crap that got on it. The weather has been below zero or just above for 2 weeks now. I just washed it 2 days ago(too cold to wash and car washes have been closed) and looked for rust....none found yet.

Now I don't understand the washing argument?!
I mean, if that truck has a 5 year warranty against rust, why does it matter how often you did or did not wash it in less then a year??
Of cause salt will attack any metal, but it is impossible to keep any salt in the winter from the vehicle. You would have to wash it right on your property and that would exclude the people who park on the street!
That is why the bumper is Stainless/Chrome, so that they don’t rust!

So I wonder how many times per week you need to wash to keep the rust away. And what would happen if we washed to often?

Update!!!

Just saw the Area Rep for the Madison area. Both bumpers being replaced. She took pictures and is creating a service report, that will be sent to Toyota.

Again, if you have a rust issue be sure to bring it to your Dealers attention.

Can you give the information of the dealer you are using! The owner at the dealership I go to was giving it a wait and see attitude with the Rep. If I have info that toyota is replacing yours, then I think I could push things along faster.

If the Rep is giving the go ahead to replace yours up in Wisconsin, then all should be replaced.

Thanks in advance.

he even said he will soon go to 3 local garages and get quotes for the repairs, which there is no way that the time spent driving around town and getting quotes is not equal to the time going to the dealership to have the guy look at it. Marc needs to grow up and stop having a hissy fit.
Tampa I agree with you on the issue. I've been there done that and loss. I even met the factory rep who accused me of pulling down my headliner. I loss $200 that day of work just to get accused Did Toyota ask anyone that was complaining if they owned another Toyota? GM does. It didn't help. Glad to see they will replace the bumper. Sometimes persistance will prevail. Or speak LOUDLY and carry a BIG STICK. That might get someone's attention.

I was just showing my Dad the rusting issue on the bumper, when he noticed that there was rusting on the white paint itself. I will get some pics up so you guys can see. I just left a message with the dealership, this is crazy.

Well took the truck to the dealership yesterday. They look at it and said it was probably rail dust from the train, which happened in shipping. I guess little mental shavings can get imbedded into the chrome and paint. They are going to clay bar the entire vechile and detail it.

Hopefully this will solve the problem. Going to take pics today.
