07 Tundra Slap/Clunking in Drivetrain

I have a 2007 Tundra Regular Cab 4x4 with the 4.7 liter engine. From the day i drove it home it had a serious clunk in the drivetrain when accelerating from a stop and when slowly coming to a stop. I took it to three dirrerent dealers before the problem was finally determined. At first i was told that the clunking was normal but I refused to believe that. My friend has an 05 with the 4.7 and has no problem. It turned out to be excessive tolerances in the splines on the driveshaft. The driveshaft was replaced and it is perfect now. Do not give up if you are having this problem. It is correctable and it is not a "normal operating characteristic" like I was told the first two times. Make them check the driveshaft if this is happening to you. It is not in the suspension.

Sometimes I get a clunk a few seconds after I start it in morning. Before I put in drive. Were you getting that?

I just picked up an '08 crewmax and noticed the clunking you're talking about when accelerating from a stop and right before coming to a stop when driving straight. It doesn't seem to make the clunk when the wheel is slightly turned. I first thought it was the brake caliper sliding a little. I went back to the dealership after a few days and had a tech sit and listened as I drove. After the drive, the tech told me that it's the draveshaft slipping slightly to reduce stress and that it was normal on all the new tundras.
I do a lot of city, stop and go driving and it's driving me crazy. I think I'm going back to test drive some other tundras on the lot to see if they also have the clunking problem. Anyone else out there with this clunking sound?

Can't say that I have and from me that's not normal. That's B/S. They don't want to do the time to find out what's wrong. Simply put Mr. Service Advisor can you put that in writing for me that it's normal with your full name. When it breaks then you can explain it to your supervisor/manager.

Wow FB I had that exact same problem with my 2000 Tundra back in the day and replacing the drive shaft was the exact fix!

I had the same problem. 2 different dealerships and a total of 3 times bringing in for the "slack" in the drivetrain. Finally, I was able to strongarm the regional service manager, who was fully prepared to do nothing, to swap the driveshaft with one of the new trucks on the lot. He assured me that this would not fix the problem but would do it just to show me that there was nothing wrong with the driveshaft. Driveshaft swapped, problem solved. If you have this problem, insist that they change the driveshaft. If you need backup send me a private message and I will give you the dealership name and date that all of this went down. I am sick and tired of Toyota sending us away with the "there is no defect so there is nothing we can do" bullcrap.

Thanks to FatBoss for the advice.

Hi there. I have a -8 Tundra 4x4 CrewMaxand when I come to a complete Stop I feel a litlle bump in the body of the car and when I start again, that very first second I feel kind the same type of bump in the body of the truck. It feels like when you have a slack in the driveshaft U joints or when you have a transmission mount broke and the transmission hits the cab when you give it some gas on initial start up. I went to the dealer and they told me that they had a couple of complains like this and that it should go away in a couple of thousand miles. But I did not buy his malarky and I will try another dealer. Other then that my gas milege on my 5.7 with 75% city streets and blvds,I get 15.7MPG and on the HWY 19.4MPG witch I think is pretty good, but is hard to keep my foot light on the gas.
Please let me know if anybody have experience this simptom and how you got rid of it.

Thank you in advance.

Fireball,

This is exactly what mine was doing. A little bump in the drivetrain when taking off from a dead stop. New driveshaft, no more problem. The problem didn't get better with mileage, but got considerably worse. I belive that the clearances on the spline of the driveshaft were bad from the factory on my first driveshaft. I would go to your dealer and ask them to swap driveshafts with a new truck and see if the problem goes away. That's what I had to do to get anything done.

Good luck.
