No torque at low RPM when rolling

Have any of you guys experienced this?

I will start from a stop, going slow. Then, with the wheels rolling, when I slowly apply gas, the engine revs but you cannot feel any torque going to the wheels. Then, after high enough revs, you can feel the torque being applied and the truck will accelerate.

Is this normal?

I cannot see a difference if it is warm or cold out.

Doesn't sound right. My truck pulls hard no matter what I do. Make sure your traction control hasn't engaged because it will cut the power if a wheel spins. The little light in the tach area will flash if it has engaged. It is very noticable when it engages. There have been some tourqe converter issues but I think they displayed a different symptom. If it's not the trac control then I would take it to the dealer and have them figure it out.

My truck does the same thing and it is most noticeable when you are going down a slight grade and vehicle is coasting then when you start applying the throttle the engine just revs with no power going to the wheels. This does not seem normal to me either and I am wandering if it is related to the torque coverter. When I first got my truck I had the rumblestrip thing going on with my transmission but that seems to have gone away but now I have noticed this going on. I am getting ready to take it in for an oil change and I will check on this issue, if anyone else has run into this and has any info, it would be greatly appreciated.

I have noticed mine doing it from time to time under the same conditions - going downhill or coasting at approximately 5-10 mph or less and then pressing on the gas slightly. I think it is just the transmission going into 1st gear instead of staying in 2nd gear, thus the revving. On flat ground it will lock into 2nd gear and continue on. Mine also seems to do it more whenever the tranny is cold, although that isnt the case every time.

I think it is part of the logic that tells it to downshift when you are going downhill or coasting. It is a nuisance at times, but I dont think there is anything wrong with it. Mine even does the same thing at faster speeds after it downshifts going downhill, then press the gas again and it stays in that same gear until you let off again or gain an amount of speed that makes it upshift.

Why in the world would the engineers of Toyota have your unit downshift
going downhill?

Something doesn't ring true here at all. Sounds like a problem to me.

So you wouldn't want your trans to shift down for you on a large downhill grade while towing a 10,000lb trailer????? I would!!!! This truck is designed to tow and haul heavy loads. The "decent control" is probably why it is shifting on a downhill grade.

Ever see those signs for semis on moutain passes that say..Trucks use lower gears???? That's because they are heavy and they can't hold back 80,0000lbs with the brakes alone so they need to use engine braking.

That is why the truck is designed to shift down on downhills. It's a heavy duty truck designed haul heavy loads.

Codial, are you saying auto downshifting is programmed/engineered into
the Tundra? This can be found in the owners manual?

If that is the case, I STAND CORRECTED!

I don't own any Toyota products yet. I'm still doing my homework as to what
I want next, American or Toyota.

That's what I am saying. Here is a cut and past right from the Toyota website.

6-speed electronically controlled transmission with intelligence (ECT-i), sequential shift mode and uphill/downhill shift logic TOW/HAUL mode (5.7L V8)

The picture of the tandem axle armored truck on all my messages does the same thing. It has an Allison auto trans that will sense when the truck is slowing and needs more engine braking, thus it shifts down on it's own especially on downhills. It also has an engine retarder to give even more engine braking power. BTW that armored truck weighs 29,000lbs empty and 52,000lbs fully loaded with only 3 axle sets of brakes to slow it down. Without engine braking it would be a quick trip off of some of the mountain passes we have here Montana.

When pulling my boat and exiting the freeway and starting to slow on the exit ramp, the Tundra begins to downshift on its own, made stopping very easy. It was very noticable and I liked it.
