Okay, here's the latest update...

I picked up my Tundra from the dealer tonight. I had a really good chat with the tech that's been working on it for the last couple of days. Super nice guy.

He said he's almost certain its a bad bearing inside the front differential. He explained that when you select 4WD, the transfer case locks onto the front driveshaft and there is a "locking sleeve" in the front diff that locks onto one of the front axles. He believes the bearing in or around this locking sleeve is the problem.

Here's what he did:

1. Removed front drive shaft and went for a drive. Hum still there in 2WD but not in 4WD. The front diff still locks onto the axle even with the front driveshaft missing so this eliminated the transfer case from the picture.

2. Removed both front axles. Went for a drive without the axles and the hum was completely gone. This showed that the wheel bearings were okay.

3. Toyota Canada instructed him to replace the diff fluid with a synthetic. He did this, but it made no difference. Apparently there was a case in the US with the same problem where the fluid made a difference.

4. Check various other things too.

So, they're going to go ahead and replace the front differential. Its on order now and will take a week or so to get.

I'll be sure to post an updated on it when it is swapped out.

I got back my truck from the Dealer and I was told that Toyota Canada was going to look into the matter and get back to me this week. Supposedly there is going to be some "development" on correcting this issue.

Seadragon, Which dealer are you going to?

Hmmm... a development huh? I wonder if a TSB will be issued then. I've read many posts on different forums with people having this problem. And its not just the Tundra. I read a long thread over at TS about older Sequoias with the same issue.

My dealer is Milton Toyota in Milton, Ontario. They've been really good to deal with regarding this.

Humming is gone!

WOOHOOO!!!

The humming is history! It was the differential.

Picked up my truck tonight after the front diff was replaced and the humming, "wu wu wu wu" is gone.

There is a "slight" buzz through the steering wheel and faint hum on coarse pavement, but I think its probably normal. Its been so long that I've had the constant buzz/hum that I forget what the truck should really feel like.

But I'm very happy right now. I won't pop any corks just yet until I've driven it for a few days.

If you have this problem, you may want to have the dealer look very closely at the front differential and have it replaced. My case is on file with Toyota Canada and other dealers can access it I believe.

Thanks for the info...The dealer had me in to change the oil which I thought was a joke. I'm trying to be paitent but now that I see this, the game is on.

PappyTRD, how bad is your vibration? Mine is not a major disruption and I basically know that it's there sometimes, and sometimes not. Is your vibration pretty prevelant and constant? The best way I can describe my vibration is this: Its like holding an electric shave on the gas peddle - a vibration, but not very pronounced. I also did not notice any major change in 4 wheel drive and so far, have not had any major malfuctions with the truck in or out of 4x4 and I do use 4x4 often. Thanks for any info you can give me. I don't care for the little vibration but I'm wondering if we are dealing with two seperate issues? thanks!

Mine is prominent at around 40-60 Km/Hr. And it gets quite loud.

It only goes away when I engage the 4wd.

Newmarket Toyota informed me that there is a freeze on any differential changes until a solution is found. I'm not sure if I'm getting snowjobbed of if this is a fact.

Can anybody shed light on this subject?

Everything is fine with my truck after the diff replacement. I still get the vibe sound very faintly sometimes when driving over coarse pavement. On smooth pavement, it is quiet.

I also have an unrelated vibration in the steering and floor that has to do with the exhaust I think.

However, the "wu wu wu" type sound/vibe from the front is gone. For example, I can put it in neutral at 60 KPH and let it coast down and it is silent. The exhaust vibe I get is mostly when going up hill or when the engine under throttle.

Interesting about the freeze you mention. I think Toyota may be realizing that there is a problem with these front diffs. There are quite a few people on the forums complaining about this problem.

I have an '02 with the intermittant front diff vibration between 30-40 but I bought it used and I am past the warranty period. This vibration quits when you throw it into 4wd or drive at highway speed for 10-15 mins. It does seem to come back though, even after it is warm, if you put it in 4wd after it has disappeared. The dealership will not do anything to fix it unless I actually break it within the next 3 months. Does anyone think the vibration could be fixed by rebuilding the diff instead of replacing the entire assembly or even just the bearings? Maybe it's the ADD not fully disengaging? Has anyone actually figured out EXACTLY what is causing this common vibration? Replacing the entire thing is freakin expensive ($2700 CDN)!

I get a buzzing/humming sound that comes from the speakers whenever I accelerate while using the AUX input. Doesn't happen while listening to the radio or CD, only on AUX. Not as bad as your situation but strange non the less.

add me to the list. symptons are the same. only done test rides with the tech so far. I will be calling today as the noise is constant now.

Seadragon,

Did you notice the front end "binding" when engaged in 4wd?
We are talking the latest generation with the 5.7?

Hi Guy's. Just reading some of the problems you guys are experiencing. I own A driveline company in South Chicago. I've noticed that 07 and up toyota trucks are now using spicer driveline components. I have an 07' crewmax That I got last year when I tradred in my 2002 Tundra. Toyota then, Used a japenese design driveshaft and differential, Whick I thought were bullet proof. Why they went to Spicer is Beyond me, I always say, why switch to something different when it has been working great for all these years. Not knockin Usa built parts here But darn, I see more problems in my line of work With spicer parts in these Ford and dodge trucks everyday. Lets hope Toyota does not lose there reliablity because they want to use all american design parts. Like I said, I'm knockin American products, I spent 8 years in the US Army, But I kind of liked Toyota better when they Had good old Japenese enginereing In there product.

Well, when in 4WD, the front will bind if you make a turn on a hard surface. But that is normal for a part time 4WD system. My 4WD system has always been working fine and was not part of the problem. The tech suspected that there was a bad bearing inside the front differential that was the cause.

Yes, we're talking about the latest Tundra. Mine is a, '07 DC 4WD 5.7L. But I've read posts from others with older Tundras, Tacomas and Sequoias that have had this same problem. So, I think its a problem with the diffs in general.

My binding actually occurred in deep snow and in ice conditions. the front end would wash out in low speed turns with no power. Been 14 years since my last toyota 4x4 so thought I was just getting used to the new designs.

you would barely turn the wheels and it would stop.

Thought some thing was not quite right for a long time.

Toyota tech did say there is something wrong but like I said we are just starting the trouble shooting.
