ok...here goes . 1- turn your key on and look at the odometer, make sure it says TRIP A not trip B or ODO ok? 2- turn the key off 3-using your left hand, press and HOLD the odo button 4-turn the key on with your right hand while still holding the ODO button with your left 5-Only after seeing a series of ( -----)s and a series of (00000)s the ODO will return to your milage THEN you can release the ODO reset button

Kind of like the fuse locations not being called out...

Toyota's service department doesn't want you to know how to re-set or locate anything. This way they can charge you an arm and a leg for the service. Us shade-tree mechanics and do-it-yourselfers are the bane of a service technician's existence.

My daughter recently had her 92 Honda Civic take a dump on a mountain road. She had it towed to a local Honda dealership where they told her the distributor was shot. She called me and said they were going to charge her $560 bucks for parts and labor. I said, "FIVE HUNDRED AND SIXTY DOLLARS!!! NO WAY!"

I jumped in my truck, ran over to Chief Auto Parts, picked up a re-built for $180 bucks, drove to the dealership and installed the new distributor in their parking lot in 20 minutes, as 3 of the mechanics stood and watched me from their empty service bays.

You should have seen the look on their faces when my daughter jumped back in her car, fired it up with the first turn of the key and drove away. As they say in the MasterCard commercials, it was priceless!

Runithard- great story. And they probably would have charged 2 hours or more labor.

The Real Mechanics

For those of us who have the mechanical ability we all have these stoires of that the dealer want to charge us for the simplist tasks. I have helped out a lot of friends that would have been ripped of just because they did not know any diffrence. Dont we just love it when we question dealer service dept and they can't answer our questions. Most of these "so called mechanics" are just remove and replace. To their credit they are just doing what the service manager or floor supervisor tells them to do and are not given the time to troubshoot the problems, some of them understand the process and some do not. They are also refered to as "technicans". I have discussions with alot of them and they are just like you and I. I have also told many service departments to go pound sand the fixed the suff my self. Ok off my soap box and am done venting. However the one I like the most is the 250.00 they wanted to charge me for repacing my brake fluid car was 2yrs old. With a power bleeder I have done this in about 15 min and the cost of the fluid 10.00, give me a brake.
