P0430 Code

I got a P0430. Does this really mean that the catalytic converter is toast? Or could it be an O2 sensor? Do we have one or two cats on the truck? It's an 03 V8 AWD with 94,000 miles.

Also, how bad is it driving with a bad cat? Will I damage it further, or is it just a matter of not passing emissions testing?

Gas leakage from exhaust system
A/F sensor (bank 2 sensor 1)
HO2 sensor (bank 2 sensor 2)
Front No. 2 exhaust pipe assembly (TWC: Front Catalyst and Rear Catalyst)

These are the possible list of causes from TIS. Sounds to me like you need a catalytic converter on bank #1, that is the right side of truck. Its not uncommon. You probably wont damage anything, but you wont pass emissions and may get worse gas mileage

Thanks ToyotaTech. I did clear the code and two days (100+ miles of driving) later it hasn't come back on yet. Let's hope it doesn't, otherwise it can get expensive.

On a side note, we actually got better than normal gas mileage on the last tank

Okay the code decided to come back. I spoke with my new-to-me mechanic (another car is with him right now) and he says that often the O2 sensor behind the cat can throw this code, so it's a good thing to swap first to try and rule out the more expensive cat replacement? What do you guys think?

So bank 1 is the right/passenger side, bank 2 is the left/driver side? Do I have that right or am I mixed up? And then what does sensor 1 and sensor 2 mean? Before (1) and after (2) cat? Sorry for sounding so newb

Someone that has the capacity needs to test the sensors prior to replacement of the cat, otherwise you are wasting money. I would not throw parts at it, the response from the sensors need to be tested after you determine there are no exuast leaks

Most likely a bad O2 sensor, which is cheaper than buying a catalytic converter! I'm not sure, but I think you will have a pre and a post-cat O2 sensor? If you have 2 cats, this will be easy to troubleshoot. Swap your sensors (both) from one cat to the other. Reset everything and see if the code comes back. Hopefully, the code will follow the sensor(s), and you can get out of this pretty cheap (buy a new O2 sensor).

Bad Dad's Tundra: That sounds like a great idea - if they are fully interchangeable? When I check a parts site online, they have different part numbers depending on whether they are bank 1 or bank 2 sensor 2s (practicing my newly learned O2 terminology )

These exhaust leaks would be determined how? Just a visual inspection/sniff of the tailpipe?

That sounds like a bunch of crap to me, but really, I don't know your truck. I always thought an O2 sensor was an O2 sensor? But, sometimes I'm wrong.

Do you hear any leaks? in order to affect the sensor you are getting a code on the leak would need to be between the sensors. Basically what your truck is telling you is that there is a discrepency between the readings from sensor 1 to sensor 2, either sensor 2 is not reading corectly or the cat is not filtering

The A/F (air fuel) sensor is the sensor closest to the exhaust manifold, the o2 (oxygen) sensor is the one further back, or downstream. They are not interchangeable. A/F and O2 are baisically the same damn thing, Toyota just calls them different. As far as i know, and I have been know to be wrong, Bank 1 is passenger side and bank 2 is drivers side. Again i could be wrong but that is what I am told!

Codes p0420 is code for Bank #1
Codes p0430 is code for Bank #2

So, based on what toyodatech79 said, you have a few possible problems:
1- bad cat
2- bad A/F sensor (pre-cat sensor)
3- bad O2 sensor (post-cat sensor)

It is possible that your precat sensor is hosed, and sending incorrect readings to your computer, which makes your computer think that your post cat sensor is hosed. Or, your post cat sensor is just hosed. Do you have 1 or 2 cats? If you have 2 cats, like I said, swap your sensors and see if the code follows. If it doesn't follow your sensors, sounds like it's time for a sweet mod! (high flow cat, usually cheaper than factory cats)
