Engine Knocking Noise

I've got a 2009 5.7L DC, My engine KNOCKING noise started shortly after 4000 miles. I discovered an oil leak from the timing chain cover and oil pan, that was repaired and soon after I started hearing the KNOCKING noise. I'm not here to BASH Toyota. I've owned Silverados all my life, I had the piston slap in my 1999 1500 and 2003 2500hd, this noise in the tundra is NOT piston slap! I've taken it to the dealer 3 times,,,, their finding, "cannot duplicate the engine knock", I filed a case with TMC, the case manager Monique at first was kind and sounded like she cared when she first talked to me, she set up an appointment with my local dealer, where I bought the truck (Valley Hi Toyota in Victorville). The Factory Rep was going to inspect the truck. I drove into the service drive and the engine was knocking, service writer and mechanic heard the engine knocking. The dealer kept the truck and did some testing (so they say), factory rep comes out the following day and "supposedly" does more testing, dealer calls me and says come pick up the truck, factory rep drove truck for 24 miles and "could not duplicate the noise". I drive truck home and the engine starts knocking again.

I have all this knocking on a video camera and recorded on a cassette tape, Toyota says the evidence I have is not good enough, factory rep needs to hear it in person. I told my worthless case manager at TMC which is now LIZETTE that the engine noise is still there and the service writer and mechanic heard the engine knock the day I dropped it off, her response, that doesn't matter, the "Engineer, Factory Rep" couldn't duplicate the noise. I told her I wanted to start the arbitration process, she basically talked me out of that and offered me to take the truck to another dealer which is 40 miles away, I'm waiting for her call to let me know when I can drop it off to the other dealer.

I am very frustrated and disappointed with the LACK of customer service Toyota had provided me. I take very good care of my vehicle and I don't hot rod my vehicle, this KNOCKING noise happens at various times of the day, engine can be hot or cold, doesn't matter. Like I said, I'm not bashing the truck, I was very pleased with it until I started getting the run-a-round from the dealer and TMC. Where do I go to now?

I thought that some knock was normal, but yours might be more than that...see what the other dealer says. Some are more willing to help.

I was by my local dealership yesterday and the engine was knocking, I pulled into the service drive and the mechanic who repaired my oil leak came out. The mechanic heard the knocking noise, he agreed it wasn't normal and will call the factory rep to report what he heard. Hopefully now something will be done since the engine knock was duplicated. I'm in a loaner car waiting to hear from the dealer.

when you say engine knock, does it sound like a spun bearing or does it sound like lifter tick?
the word knock makes me think of predetonation which is insanely violent for an engine if its happening often. and predet can be fixed with higher octane fuel usually.
so im gonna guess its not actual "knock" or is it?

Engine knock like a spun bearing, it isn't lifter tick. It's much louder under the truck or listening to it next to the left front wheel, It's not as loud when the hood is open and listening to it standing in front of the truck.

I hope it's that simple of a problem/fix. Like I said earlier, the engine knock started after the oil leak was fixed. There is no CEL light and there is no loss of power. The knocking noise isn't constant and happens more after the engine is warmed up and not as much as when it's cold.

Look for the knock sensor and see if it is plugged in. Not sure where it is on these trucks.

There should be at least 2, one for each cylinder bank.

Got a call from the dealer, factory rep/tech and mechanic went through the truck and their finding was... In engine bank 1, there was a stuck hydrulic lifter which was causing the engine knocking noise at times. They are replacing all the lifters in that cylinder. Hope that cures the problem. Truck should be ready by thursday.

There are no "lifters" in an overhead cam engine such as ours. There are cam followers, but I doubt they are hydraulic

If it is not fixed go to another dealer with known good techs/mechanics who really know these trucks.

You don't sound like a troll but a truly frustrated tundra truck owner that wants nothing more then to enjoy a trouble free new truck!

GOOD LUCK TO YOU AND DON'T LET UP TILL ITS FIXED!
