Soon after I purchased my 2014 CM 4X4, I noticed a thump when accelerating. In have looked at a couple threads concerning this issue and it appears it could be the drive shaft. I have not seen anyone posting about their 2014, mainly 2011 and previous models...
I'll try the seat belt remedy and see if it works. More likely the drive shaft. I wish it was the fuel but the sound is identical full or empty. I'm bringing it in early next week....
The entire drive train on my truck is silent at all times. The engine does “roar to life” when started cold, but it soon gets quiet within 1 to 3 minutes depending on how cold it is.
Check the spare tire, is it tight in place? Check the jack and tools inside the cab, are they tight? Do you have a “draw bar” in the hitch, very common place for big thumps, clucks, and rattles? Is the tailgate closed tight, some have reported they have to slam it shut or one side may not lock all the way?
Yes I do sometimes hear the spare tire chain rattle at times, slow speed at 5mph on real bumpy roads and turning corners; particularly with the back window down all the way.
After some unscientific review - I think the thud is the fuel tank. I'll go through another tank cycle to be sure.
It appears to me the fuel tank, when more full makes the noise. Next is to figure out if the tank itself moves under the weight or the the fuel slapping the back end. Really odd.
I notice a distinct "clunk" that feels like its in the gas pedal immediate after cold starting and I start to accelerate. It only does it 1 time then its fine. It almost reminds me of a clunk you might here when engaging or disengaging 4Low on a well broken in 4x4. again it only does it once. I highly doubt its the gas tank. That doesnt make much sense to me. If it were the tank, it would do it every time i stop and start at lights and signs. Not just the first acceleration of the day. It seems it does it after ive coasted out of my driveway and begin to accelerate towards the stop sign at the end of my street. Im not sure if it does it only on a cold engine or not but i do notice is alot more on a cold start.
Nothing to worry about, the sound you hear when you turn the key is your engine. That's 5.7L of pure testosterone, get use to it, it turns heads and drops panties.
lockdownx99 mine is doing the same as yours. it kinda sounds like a cable vibrating after tension has been released/added to me. sorta like a bow string
I've noticed that its right after i fill up. Once i drive it a little it goes away. I feel it in my seat and since they moved the gas tank i still believe its the tank.
Did you check to make sure there isn't something like a wheel lock or something in the glove box or center console moving when you hit the brakes/take off?
Mine sounds like it comes from under the passenger seat. Almost like a water bottle rolling on the floor and thumping. That's the main brain under that seat right?
It doesn't sound right. I drive my new 2014 SR5 DC 5.7L with SR5 upgrade package for about 4 weeks now. After reading this I purposely tried to accelerate/stop paying attention and haven't noticed any thump. The truck drives great! I think it is a good idea for you to check it out with dealer.
I did notice what I believe is VSC in action. According to manual VSC prevents wheels from spinning by controlling engine power. I noticed some short engine power reduction when accelerating hard. It happens at the beginning for just a few seconds and then power returns back to normal as speed increases.
I read up on all the 'clunk' threads and now just shift to "N" if coming to a hard stop to relieve pressure on the tundra's unique driveshaft. From what I read a new one will be the same or worse and just probably needs greased anyway.
Haven't experienced this but the neutral thing sounds like a good practice.
I have a 2014 Platinum Crewmax 4x4, 5.7... When I first
start it.. Place in drive and get to just about 15 mph I have a "clunk"
sound from the front passenger side.. Only does it that one time, until I
stop.. turn it off.. Wait at least 10 seconds and start it back up and drive
again.. Just turned 5200 miles. BTW: It does it in 4wd or 2wd... Dealer
says "it's the front diff pressuring up"... ?? I love the truck, but am a
little concerned with this noise.
I have this issue too.. I have a 2014 CM Platinum 4x4 and the "clunk" sound started around 3000 miles.. I took it in to have them look at it. Now mine "only" does it when I first start the engine, place in drive and it reaches about 15 mph. I hear the clunk sound coming from the front passenger side. You can feel it even in the gas pedal. After that, you will not feel / hear it again until you stop and turn off the engine for 10-15 sec or longer.
I have checked this in 4wd and 2wd same issue. Full tank of gas / almost empty tank of gas. Doors locked before moving and doors not locked before moving. AC on and AC off.. I have had people laying in the floorboard and they can hear it, but can't tell where.
When I took it in the first time about this, the dealer said it's the front diff pressuring up..!..? Hmmmm I'm not buying that one, but that's what I'm told.
I contacted toyota.com and got a message back saying to work with my local dealer... ok..
I have another appt scheduled for today. Guess I will just start getting it documented.
ONLY thing I haven't tried.. Start engine, place in reverse and hit the gas to see if it does it in reverse too..!!
If anyone else has ideas, please toss'em out there..!!
