Speaking About Being Pulled Over...
Got pulled over by the local Highway Patrol last night at 2:30 AM as I was driving home from work. I knew I hadn't done anything wrong because it was one of the few times I wasn't speeding... too much.
The cop approached me on the driver's side, which I thought was weird because they're trained to come up on the passenger side for safety reasons, and it makes it easier for them to see if you're concealing anything. Anyway, he comes up to the window and says, "I hope you don't mind, but I pulled you over because I wanted to check out your truck. I'm driving a 6 year old Chevy and I'm in the market." I told him, "no problem" and gave him the grand tour. No surprise he was particularly interested in the 5.7, and really liked the looks of the Volant CAI. After I let him sit in the driver's seat to get the feel and view over the hood, he looked at me with a smile like a kid on Christmas morning and said, "Yep, I think I just found my next truck." I told him he'd love it, especially because the 5.7 Tundras make lots of power and haul "A"... "Up to the legal speed limit of course." He said, "Yeah, that's what I hear... Up to the legal speed limit." He thanked me for my time, looked at the truck one more time and said, "Yep, that's the one." Another Tundra convert in the making. I love a happy ending... Without tickets. |

You sound like you play everything by the book; as it should be. But as we both know, every cop out there is different, and some "bend" the rules as to what they should and shouldn't do. As mentioned in a previous post. I raced a Redondo Beach cop who owned; and blew me off, in a built Nova. We raced down an industrial area in Hawthorne, CA on Northrop Ave because it had been marked off at the quarter by the street racers. When we got to the end of the run there were squad cars waiting and lit us up. Didn't know it at the time, but it was all a big joke with the cops trying, and succeeding, to scare the hell out of me. Turned out it was the guy I was racing's local cop brethren. I also had two Torrance city cops catch me on Hawthorne Blvd when I was driving the turbo-charged Pinto I also mentioned in a previous post, and wanted to race me in their cruiser. My car had quite a reputation in the Beach cities in those days, and every Torrance cop knew about it because that's where I lived. At first I refused because I thought it was a setup to entrap me for racing, but the guys were adamant and told me they just wanted to see how fast it really was. So we hit the next light and when it changed I proceeded to smoke them like they were standing still. Got to the next light and the guy driving just said. "Okay, thanks" and turned off at the next corner. Yes, you have cops who follow every rule. Then you have cops who use their lights and sirens to get home in time to watch Monday night football, and cops who pull people over to check out their ride. It doesn't bother me if a fellow car/truck enthusiast wants to check out my wheels, just tells me they're human. No different than some cities who's cops pull people over for driving safe and then give them movie tickets. Personally I think it's good for police/community relations. |

Back on track, though, I would be hesitant to pull over for that. Most cop cars around here are Crown Vics, Impala's (new and old now) or Ford Explorer. I would probably continue going the speed limit while calling to verify it really is a cop. There is a F-150 reg cab in the town I work in, though. My Tundra would easily leave that in the dust (I don't advocate running from the police!)

I wouldn't pull over for it, but it is pretty cool- out local Sheriff's dept. has a 4x4 F150 with mud tires and lights on it, that they use to pull people out (and write tickets) when they get stuck mud riding on powerlines or getting through rough spots doing search and rescue stuff...it's a pretty cool truck.
I once had a minivan with red/blue lights try to pull me over, and I just set my cruise and kept going- about 1-2 minutes later, the van turned off and I never heard about it again. I figure it was probably some punk kid trying to be funny. |

Yeah, Arkansas just got a bunch of new Charger State Trooper cars- those things look fantastic...and they really go, even though they are all V6-equipped...I was talking to a state trooper a while back at an accident scene (nothing serious, fender-bender) and he got a call of some kind...when he pulled out onto the highway and floored it, it chirped the tires going into 2nd gear. The V6 didn't sound that bad either.

I believe using these in any state is illegal. I checked Florida, and it is definitely illegal there. I presume you could also be charged with impersonating a police officer. Be careful where you take the truck to take the pictures
It is expressly prohibited for any vehicle or equipment, except police vehicles, to show or display blue lights.
