6 Months with a turbo tundra...

Well after almost 6 months with my turbo system on my truck I have but one word to describe it: BRILLIANT!!!! This thing has been absolutely trouble free, and on the rare occasion that I've kept my foot off the wood, my gas mileage has increased! A shop here in town did the kit for me, and I believe they're now producing them in kit form, but mine was the prototype. The name of their kit is Tundrachargers, but I know them as Motiva Performance Engineering. I'm going in next week to have my intercooler installed and the boost cranked up to 10psi! I gained almost 100hp at the wheels non-intercooled at 5 psi, and have had it turned up to 6psi for about 3 months now. I'm hoping to break the 400rwhp mark at around 9 psi. The guys that are doing the kit say it will support 7-8psi for a long, long time (30k mi and counting, with no issues on their shop test truck), but aren't sure what's going to happen at 10 psi, so I'll let everyone know.
Here's some pics:

And here are my dyno graphs:

THE WHOLE KIT BOLTS IN!!!! I've taken it off myself in my driveway in less than an hour and a half to take it into the dealer for some unrelated warranty work, and then had it back on in about the same time. The dealer was none the wiser.

The turbo is mounted off the frame, right below the bed. The air intake is above the wheel well (higher than factory) and then the charge pipe runs to the throttle body. And that's definitely not PVC LOL!!! That's ceramic coated steel to help the thermal efficiency.

Last time I was down there they were getting started on an 08' 5.7l. Something about a rear-mount single first, and then a traditional mount twin. Cool stuff!

That looks pretty slick, what does that turbo do to the exhaust sound? It looks like your running Flowmaster or something like it or maybe no muffler I can't tell...

I just have a dump on mine. It can be had with a muffler though. I like the sound of the turbo so that's why they've just put the dump on mine.

Ceramic makes more sense to me than pvc , lol ! That system looks like very high quality materials are used . Please keep us up to date on the 5.7 testing , as I'm sure alot will want to see how much HP that will make .
Thank you for the pics too !

That seems like an awful short exhaust tube, and the way it sits looks like you don't want to be driving in no big rain storms.Plus the fact that if you run it very hard and get the EGTs up around 1200 DF that it may warp your vanes. But then again sitting that far back from main exhaust it will have cooled down quite a bit by the time it reaches the compressor side.

Have you ever checked to see what your EGTs are and do you have a probe?

That is also a lot of boost tube plumbing on that setup,do you have an IC or run it straight to the intake?

waste of time and money...why turbo a truck up? super charge would be better for that torque curve! just IMO...

Not true. A small turbo would make excellent TQ at 2000rpm or at least a significant amount more than we currently have and would be more reliable than a supercharger and probably cheaper as well as easier to work on/with.

Actually 6 psi from a turbo charger vrs.6 psi from a supercharger would gain you more net hp.A supercharger depending on whether you have an underdrive, overdrive,or a 1 to 1 ratio. It will cause a parasititic HP loss in direct relation on how much boost you are running, whereas a TC has no loss as it is run by your exhaust gas. However a SC has one advantage over a TC as there is no spool time or turbo lag.

Only thing a TC or a SC does is cram more A/F ratio into your engine over normal asperated. The tourqe and HP curve are dertermind by lift, duration,of your cams and how your timing is set up.

Another thing is engine bay heat soak with the SC,but then again you don't have to worry about your EGTs as bad.At 1200 DF aluminun starts to melt.

If our 5.7s where a true 10.2 CR then about 6/7 psi is all that engine will stand. Now if we have fordged rods and pistons and 8.1 to1 CR then you could boost up what ever the crank would hold.Maybe 20 psi which should give us somewhere in the neighborhood of 500+ HPYou be alookin at close to 600 at 20 psi.

Yeah but if you look at it he would handle up on a 5.7 with that setup, nice job I dont really care for rear mount turbos but whatever gets the job done! The downfall of a supercharger is it runs off of your crank so it puts more stress on your motor, turbo is the way to go for anything, but you do have to deal with lag.

Wait until the 5.7 SC come out we should be in 500hp range.
