Talking 2005 4.7 L Crew Exhaust? Worth da trouble?

I'm looking at adding an exhaust to my crewcab. I'm only looking for the muffler and will be keeping the original plumbing. I had an 01 with headers, high flow cats, and borla and it sucked big time. I spent tons of greenbacks only to trade because I was getting 12mpg and lost back pressure.

The back pressure was fixed by adding the original cats back to the truck. It worked. The truck ran faster and sounded good except for a freaking drone the borla carried and the mpgs.

Has anyone added a muffler only to a crew with the 4.7L and lost back pressure? I want to research this some before I go throwing money away.

If you do an exhaust properly it will give you better performance and sound along with better mileage. And there are many mufflers and cat back systems with little to none cabin drone.

You lose back pressure when A) you put a muffler on that is too big and does not provide enough back pressure or is too small and has so much back pressure that the exhaust can not flow through it. B) you use pipes that are either or both, too large in diameter or are kinked and not smoothy mandrel bent.

There are a good number of exhaust for the 07-08 4.7, just look one up you like then buy the muffler on its own. Or you may be able to find the cat-back kit on ebay for the price of the muffler and installation.

Thanks for the reply. I don't want a cat back because I'm tired of dealing with leaks. I'd like to get a good sounding muffler with a nice rumble but not annoying or with a droan.

Believe me I spent some time on my old 01's exhaust system and it sounded and ran great except for the workmanship on it was crap and they were and are still the only long tube headers around.

So, No! I don't want to spend $2K on this truck. Chances are I'll be trading it in in a year or 2. I just need the muffler to weld on that will not ruin my trucks performance right now. As it is I'm getting 14MPGs. I don't want to revisit the 12MPGs stage. I was getting 15MPG but then I slapped on some Enkei 20s and am now suffering. I figure I can get a good muff for sound and maintaining my performance as is. If I can get good performance and better mileage that will just be gravy.

I read somewhere that the 4.7l Does not like anything other than the stock pipe diameter.

If you want higher mpg's get a CAI. My 07 crewcab gets 20-21mpg at 60, 18-19.5 at 70, and 24.7mpg at 55. My Borla XRS duals added a.5mpg.

Thanks for the FYI on the CAI. I thought all that stuff would mess with the MAF sensor and all that? That's one of the reasons I'm real careful of messing with this one.
