Premium Gas?
Anyone try higher octane 91 or 93 to see if there is better performance? Just wondered if the stock computer would advance the timing with higher octane. I read where some vehicles can adjust there timing tables with diff. octane gas.

I didn't notice any performance difference as it relates to speed, but when I went up a grade to plus the truck jumped in gas mileage. It was enough to convince me to run plus all the time.

If I were running at sea level I'd run the recommended 87 octane.

What premium does for you is the same thing as STP fuel treatment. Use premium twice a year to clean your jets and everything else. Just the same with STP fuel treatment will do. It doesn't give you better gas mileage (myth). Mythbusters proved that.

.............and major brand 87 octane gasoline has the same detergents and amounts that 91/93 octane gasoline has.

Just wondering because couldn't it matter if the Technology in the New Tundras are ahead of Mythbusters...

Well, I don't care what Mythbusters said, my mileage went up by almost 2 mpg when I went to the mid grade. The ONLY gas I run is Chevron - and using their regular grade I had NO ping and NO performance issues. As such, I didn't think that going up a grade would do anything. But the very best I could do was 15.3 mpg with mixed driving. I am now running Chevron plus and the mileage has jumped to the low 17's - and that's a consistant increase measured over three full tanks.
Heck, you can see the difference on the trip computer as you're driving. Hills that use to drop me down to 13 or 14 mpg now show a steady 16. But don't take my word for it, just try it yourself. The cost difference for a full tank is right at $3 and it certainly can't hurt anything.

In addition to the extra hp, you should also notice improved throttle response. I had removed (cut out) the charcoal evap filter element from the top of the stock air box as well, to further improve air flow. If you end up doing this be sure to disconnect the air box lid completely and cut out the evap filter (I used a box cutter) over a trash can so you don't end up raining charcoal pellets down into your throttle body intake tube.

I'm going to Check it out before I add before I add the new air intake, could definitely use another couple of mpg. Last tank only averaged 15 mpg but some of that was pulling a trailer and a bucnh of hills.

From what I've read about timing & new computers pulling timing (power) because of low octane, you won't hear any ping because the computer pulls timing with the knock sensors. Octane really makes a diff. in my supercharged Regal.
