Unsulated Intake

Sorry, I mean Insulated. With Reflectix I insulated complete intake box & hose. I also bypassed the TB coolant hoses & picked up about .2 from 0 - 60. Anyone know what the upper intake filter is for & is it OK to remove it?

If you're talking about the mesh and filter material in the top of the stock box, it holds granulated carbon to trap vapors from the fuel evac system.

I cut mine out after I installed a K&N replacement filter, just before I trashed the whole stock box and installed a Volant CAI.

Depending on where you live, if you cut it out you won't pass your smog check to get your cert.

RunitHard,

IYO, is it really worth the cost to install a K&N cold air intake, what are the benefits. Would I really see an increase in mileage/performance or is it a personal preference. Also with these new K&N is it still necessary to recharge the filters.

I put an AFI CAI on mine and made a noticeable difference. Sound is awesome too... Went with AFI instead of K&N after reading a lot of reviews...

I say... Go for it!!!

Does the mesh thing affect emissions output or do you mean that they physically check the air box for this mesh filter? It seems like it would impede air flow?

It doesn't effect emissions output so it won't be missed during tailpipe testing. It's there to trap fuel vapors from backing out through the intake and venting to the apmoshpere. However, some states are required to visually check all emission control devices are in place (Cali is one of the worst). So depending on where you live, they will check to see if the carbon filter is there. And yes, it does impede air flow somewhat.

A K&N flat panel replacement for the stock filter is good, a closed box CAI is better. I went with the Volant and it definitely increased my throttle response, added 8 to 12 hp (realistically), and increased my fuel economy from .8 to 1.2 mpg... When I can keep my foot out of it. It also sounds awesome! It really makes the engine growl when you drop the hammer.

It's a mandatory item if you plan on (or have) a cat-back or header/cat-back combo.

If anyone wants my K&N flat panel replacement filter for the stock 07/08 5.7 air box, I'll sell you the one I bought just before upgrading to the Volant. It only has 300 miles on it so it's basically brand new. $20 plus whatever UPS ground is. PM me if you're interested.
