My garage is tight lengthwise so I often drive my front license plate screws into the drywall when I park. I have a possible work-around suggestion for you. Since you are going to scrape on one side or the other, make it the passenger side and place some sort of soft-catch at mirror height on that side of your garage. Slowly pull in and allow the catch to gently fold your mirror in, sort of like production-line automation.
This will work if you are hitting the inside of your gagrage but if it is the very outside, your house that you are hitting, then I don't know if I would want something jerry-rigged on my exterior but it's still possible.
