Any thoughts on deck rail system?

Got my new Tundra last week.....'09 Tundra Grade DC 4x4....and it came with the deck rail system. I like the idea of it, but it's not something I would have specifically sought out. What has the experience been of those who have used it? Do the cleats stay in place or do they tend to loosen? Advantages, disadvantages? Any interesting things anyone's used it for that you couldn't do with the tie down hooks in the bed?

Any thoughts or tips are appreciated!!

I had them added when I bought my Tundra and I'm glad I did. They stay in place well and are convienent. The only problem I'm told of is don't leave them on as they get ripped off. It hasn't happened to me but it happened to a friend of mine.

Thanks for the input. That was my first thought too when I got the cleats out of the package to try 'em out.....how easily they could be removed and stolen. I'll be keeping mine under the back seat until I need them for sure.

Mine hold in place better than I expected. I find the system very handy and I do remove them when not in use

Some tonneau covers use the bed rail system to attach mounting hardware. The cover we have REQUIRES that the Tundra have the bed rail system installed.

Pull the rails off the bed, put the tie downs in backward (two on each rail, pointing in the opposite direction), then mount the rails in the truck. Then they can't be stolen easily if you do it right.

I have the rails and use it for my tonneau. The tonneau tie downs protect the cleats from getting stolen. I have noticed that if I use the cleats on anything large, the cleats will come loose and move. So I use them only for perpendicular (to the bed side) strapping. I use the corner tie downs for anything heavy.
