Question Tailgate Reenforcement

Hey guys...was down at the dealer, Lithia Toyota, last Friday and told them my concerns with the tailgate not being sturdy from what Ive collectively heard on this forum. The service manager says Toyota makes a reenforcement insert when they come in on warranty that drastically changes the stiffness of the tailgate! I asked if I could buy it and he said NO? I have to wait till I bend my frickin tailgate or find some reason to have it under warranty. Any thoughts?

HMMM..I was at my dealer about 2 weeks ago and asked them about the weak tailgate issue. They didn't say anything about an insert. Gonna go ask them about it when I get back home.

I'll call my fleet sales buddy at Longo Toyota in LA, if the parts exist he will get me a set. Maybe they can be reproduced aftermarket.

They said no?... That's pretty stupid if people are willing to pay for it as an add-on. Hell, slap "TRD" on it and I'll buy it as an accessory. Toyota makes a profit and everybody's happy. Even though by making it available they're acknowledging they designed a weak tailgate.

Well there isn't one single Service writer at Longo that knows anything about this insert. Hmmmmm....

Most of the newer tailgates are welded near the corners and have an extra support inside them. I have seen pictures of the new welds, but have not seen the new insert yet. Seems more like a band-aide fix to me.

From what I have been seeing the welds/sealant were a temporary fix, the newest tailgates fixes are all internal, there's nothing external to distinguish them. This is post March 08 tailgates from my research.
