Question A couple of questions from a Newbie!!!!!

Hey guys,

I just picked up a 2008 CrewMax 5.7. I am new to the truck world with my previous vehicle being a 4Runner. I bought the truck to tow the family camper with since the whell base on the 4Runner to short. I am very please with the truck so far and can't wait to tow with it!!!!

A couple of things I need/want to do to the truck in the very near future are nerf bars/bedliner/bed cover. I have started my research on these but am overwhelmed by the amount of options out there. Anyone have any good ideas?? Here is what I am looking for and why.

Nerf Bars: I have a five and seven year old kids. A little tough to climb all the way up into the truck. I know I want the tube style in stainless steel chrome covered. Best/Worst to look for???????

Bedliner: I was first thinking of going with the standard plastic form fitting cheap drop in but am having second doubts. I will carry my snowmobile in the bak end from time to time and was concerned about getting the bed sprayed because the carbides would chew the liner up. That was the main reason I was looking at the cheap plactic ones. Other than that I would like to have a liner where things don't slip around. So I think I may just have a piece of plywood ready for when I do haul the sled and then have a slip resistant liner for everyday use. Any thoughts and cost effect way???

Bed Cover: ????? Hard top that locks that is fairly inexpensive so too speak and can easily be removed with two people when I want to haul the sled or 4 wheeler. I am at a lose for this so any suggestions would help.

So with all this said and typed out I think I probably should have posted this topic in a different forum. I will put it in a different place but will leave it here to see if I get any responses.

Thanks in advanced for the help.

Pete

I have the factory stainless nerf bars and I really like them. They're a little wider than most which makes it really nice to step up on. I currently have the cheap plastic liner in my 07 CM. It came with the liner and I purchased an after market rubber floor liner and put it down to keep things from sliding. It works well for me. If you want a spray in liner, I would go with the Line X. It seems to be the hands down choice of most on this site. As to a tonneau cover, I purchased a tri-fold BakFlip. It's PVC and folds in three pieces. When it's closed and the tailgate is locked, the whole bed is locked. It costs around $650. Very low profile. Another one that may fit your need is the Coverall. It's a one piece cover that has gas struts and you lift it like a trunk. I've been told it comes off very easily. Good luck with towing. I use my CM to tow a 30' 6700# Jayco Travel Trailer. The Toyota is a complete joy to tow with. Gas mileage will suffer greatly - approx 8.5 mpg but it tows effortlessly and I always feel very secure. Enjoy the new ride!

Congrats on your purchase and welcome to the forum! As far as steps go I went for the AMP powersteps, they are flush when the door is closed and when you open the door the automatically extend to a step, my 2 year old climbs into the cab by herself with no problem, they are pricey, total price with the install was $1000 but that was my splurge item that I spent some of my tax retrun on My truck bed is currently covered in line-x and a leer 700. The leer is nice, color matched to the truck but not as easy to take off, 6 bolts and you need two people to take it off. The bakflip was my second choice and still might pick one up if my buddy buys my leer of me

Thanks guys!!! This is great info!! I think the bedliner will definitly be the Line-X. Those Amp-powersteps look great but 1G on steps is a little steep for me!!!! Still up in the air on the cover, way to many choices!!!

GNYHUF-That is awesome!!!! I just emailed my dealer to tell them I want to setup an apointment to get this turned on. I am going to push for no charge since it is really part of the truck already. We will see!!

Thanks again,
Pete

Yes get that alarm turned on. Mine was armed when I received it. Now I have Trail FX SS Nerf bars. Wife being 5.6 needs every bit of help to get in. That was the first thing she approved in mods on my truck. I have Herculiner painted in my last 3 trucks. My 98 Chevy I had 5 years with no problems. It took me about 3 hours to do and cost only $68 plus I had to get acetone to softened the paint. For those who were in the Navy will understand this term it's identical to Non-Skid. Non-Skid was used on ships where you walk at out on the weather decks so you don't slip on your butt. The flight deck of a carrier is another example. I used also Extang Black max on all my trucks. It's a soft cover and rolls up when you need the bed to put things in. You don't need help to remove it. Also for the Tundra Extang has it for rails or without the rails. The C clamps are longer with the rails.

Wish I could help I never had a 5th wheel on any truck I had. The only thing besides a 18.5 ft boat I have now was a 13ft Rockwood popup camper.

No extended. The mirrors I got auto close, heated, and antiglare. Ohh yeah they have that stupid chrome on them too. Prefer the painted ones.

Personally I would stick with the spray in Rhino-liner, they're sprayed on thicker it seems like. Plus what I would do is lay a sheet of plywood in the bed of the truck before loading your snowmobile to protect the bed liner. plywood is cheaper than replacing the liner.
