Just installed Bushwacker pocket style flare on and modified my stock mudflaps to fit. I have pics here, Now the question is "with or without mudflaps"?
Post up how you modified them. My worst fear is getting pulled over for something stupid and then going to jail for something even more stupid (read between the lines).
I also have those flares, but I really want to add my mudflaps back on.
Between with and without, definitely without looks better. Between with and without (along with long mudstreaks on the side), with looks better, not only in short term, but in the long run.
I used a DREMEL with the sanding band in slow speed not to burn but to shave off the stock mudflaps and match the curves on the BW flare. I'll post some pics when I get back in So. Cal this weekend.
Leave them on. I like how you modified them to fit the flares better.
Regardless, they serve a purpose. To me, it is the one thing that I functionally either install or leave on my truck. Granted they don't look great, they serve a huge purpose in protecting parts of the body of the your vehicle. And, the biggest thing, is they reduce a lot of spray to trailing vehicles. I, for one, cannot stand following a vehicle in any sort of rain or snow that does not have mud flaps installed. I have had a fair share of shit kicked up into the front of my truck because of lack of mudflaps.
I know some people don't really have to deal with much rain/snow, but if you live in a part of the country that does, do everyone a favor and leave them on.
It is one of those "less enforced" laws. I think most states have some wording about how much of the tire is allowed to be exposed. There is also wording for how much the tire can stick outside of the fender wells.
I used a Dremel with a sanding band @ 6-7K rpm so not to burn the plastic. Just slowly sand the flap to follow the shape of the your BW flares. A little at the time will do till you get it snug on the flare. I have a 2013 and I have to remove some parts of it since it's on the way in between the flare and the flap. You might need to remove more or less since you have a 2014. You will need to bolt this on the BW flare. I do have 3 inches of gap between the tires on this flap. Here's a few pics of mine.
I want mudflaps on mine because of the roads I travel. Function over looks is my primary choice. I like a good looking pickup but the parts need to have a purpose. I want to add Bushwackers with some different tires but I have yet to figure out how to get the flares and mudflaps to work together without rubbing on the tires.
am i the only one here who thinks that removing mud flaps all together is one of the most inconsiderate mods people can do?
there are cars behind you btw. those of us know own pleasure cars, that are low to the road prob understand this more than those who just want their tires to 'look cool'...
please keep your mud flaps. our windshields thank you.
I know a lot of people will say that having a truck for pleasure is inconsiderate. Lifting it? More so. Mud tires? Hell no.
To a certain extent, we balance things so that we don't become a danger to others. I don't think missing mud flaps is much of a problem in itself. Unless you have a crazy offset, most of the spray is along the body of the truck (at least for mine). I would think that changing out head light to brighter light would present more 'danger' than missing mud flaps.
Just on the side note: I checked PA law regarding trucks. I found some of the popular mods are illegal in PA.
1. It's illegal to use any sort of lift block in the front.
2. It's illegal to have the tread of the tire outside the fender or fender flares.
3. It's illegal to have your exhaust existing inside the body line of the vehicle.
4. They also have specific requirement as to the maximum allowed bumper height, and so on. (I know some very cool trucks on this forum are illegal in PA)
Point to note: for medium and heavy duty trucks, mud flaps are required by law. For light duty trucks, there is no such requirement. Apparently, missing mud flaps is not as dangerous as having tires sticking out of the fender (at least some law makers thought so).
dude im not splitting hairs here. im just saying removing rear mudflaps completely is an inconsiderate thing to do. on par with slapping HIDs in reflector bowls.
My truck came rolled of the lot without mud flaps...if I had some I might would try and modify them just like the OP did.
