If you have a Win7 64bit machine then you have to install the Techstream in XP Mode which is essentially a VM running XP. 64 bit versions of Windows are more secure than 32 bit versions and drivers are required to be signed in order to install them. Also, you would need a 64bit driver anyway as 64bit systems do not support 32 bit drivers, I have not looked on the disk but I doubt they included a 64bit driver and if they did, I doubt it is signed. If there is a 64bit driver and you are an admin then you should be able to configure Windows to allow you to install unsigned 64bit drivers to see if you can get it working. In the end it is easier just to use XP Mode.

If you really want XP and don't want to use XP mode then it would be much cheaper to dual boot your laptop. XP mode is easy and works perfect though and is free.

I have windows 7 home premium and I guess you have to have the premium to download XP mode, right?

If you have a machine that has XP drivers, which many of the newer one don't.
You could install the 32 bit version of 7 and I think that will work.
I also though you'd need a XP licence if you run the virtual pc in XP mode.
Using a older pc is low tech and doable by more people.

You don't need an XP license for XP mode. If you dual boot you can buy XP for $40-50 if you don't have an old copy.

What I think is funny about this is I bought the laptop specifically for the TIS website and and it meets there requirements but it does meet the hacked TIS techstream software requirements, so I am considering loging into the TIS website for two days for $15 just to download the true techstream cable driver. Will this work?

I had the techstream installed on my HP (HUGE PIECE!) worked pretty well even on the Vista 32. I used it for my LED gauge install and the electric fan kits I have been building.
