Thumbs up LED Map Light Mod

I got these LED map lights off of eBay for $18.99 from a seller that goes by "maple125." They have an assortment of colors to choose from (blue, red, amber, green, and white). I chose white. They came very well packaged in bubble wrap from Toronto and took 5 business days to get here from there.

Contents of the package:

They supplied several adapters for each panel of LEDs.

Regular map lights:

Start by removing the clear plastic cover. I didn't take a pic because we obviously all know what it looks like. Then, you need to half-way remove the flimsy reflective backing. Be super careful because the edges of the metal are sharp and it can be a pain in the ass to get out. Remove it from the side that is farthest away from the windshield. You WILL need to bend it just a slight bit. It will just hang there.

Pull out the little spade light. This is where you can have your wife/gf/concubine help partake in removing the light especially if they have small fingers!

Use this adapter that came with the set:

Connect the above piece to one of the small panel of LEDs and then insert the spade part into the map light socket. It took a small amount of pressure in order to get it in there for me. (Careful, the LEDs are so bright I almost blinded myself.) Now replace that metal piece and bend it back to normal. The LED panel has a sticky side to it but it helped me in no way. So, I took some of that blue sticky stuff that one can put behind a poster to help it stick up on a wall. Be sure to make it centers so that the light will shine through the circular magnified area.

Now put the clear plastic part back in.

One installed so far:

Both of them installed:

View from the backseat. You can definitely tell the difference between the two different kinds of lights:

Outside views:

What I would've done different:

--Daytime installation or at least had a damn flashlight with me so that I could try and see which way the spade in went in because I couldn't see what I was doing.

--Bought two sets (for the backseat domes) instead of just one.

--Read a tutorial like this.

I got the second set in today and installed the rear dome lights.

Hey thanks. Great post and pics. I changed my interior bulbs to blue "mood" lights a while back. Looks pretty cool but they are on the dim side. These look real bright.

I may look into getting these.

Thanks again.

I'll just add that they have a direct link:

eBay Store - ExtremeBrightLEDs: ExtremeBrightLEDs.com, www.ExtremeBrightLEDs.com

I just ordered more for the back dome light.

Looks good and bright, but why did you go with LED boards? Typicall boards are used for external applications like the cargo lights in your 3rd light housing. These worked out great for me, OEM replacement with no adapters needed, took 10min to switch out front and rear dome lights. They sell a single cone shaped LED that works great for the puddle light in your door panel. The 4 LED bulb in the link below is too large for the door application, single cone fits perfect. Another 10min install.... LOL

24hrtoy can you add pics of yours for comparison? I'd like to see which is brighter. Good mod though and fairly easy. Do the lenses just pop off? I'll be doing one of these soon just not sure which one yet.

So you used those LEDs inside the truck, right?

I put a set of the 4 LED single bulbs in my map lights and then went ahead and put a set in the rear console lights. They are blue and wow are they bright! I got them from "maple125" as well. Can't imagine how intense those ones are that TundraTough put in.
