Installing a USA-spec PA12-TOY I-pod adapter (dialup beware)

I took this thing out of my Tacoma before I traded it for the Tundra. It works well and I can select songs through the CD controls on the radio. It also charges the I-pod. The sound through the Aux. input plug was not very loud and the quality of the sound was also lacking. With the PA12-TOY it sounds a lot better (ie. more base) and it's louder than just putting the I-pod through the Aux. jack. Well here is a little write up on the install. Sorry about the dark pics but it was dark out.

I learned how to take the dash apart from the link below (thanks MHadden). I have the column shifter, so this will be geared towards that dash configuration. However everything from removing the HVAC controls on up will apply to both styles. The link also shows both styles.

http://documents.victorytechnologies...ct/99-8220.pdf

Like the link states start by taking out the plastic screws on either side of the lower panel. One of mine would not come out by unscrewing it so I just pried it out with a small flathead.

Next remove the cupholder by pressing this tab on both sides, it slides right out.

After you remove the cupholder you will be faced with this. Remove the five screws (one 10mm bolt) and pull out the cupholder assembly.

Now your ready to pull out the HVAC controls. Just give it a good yank and it comes right out. The panel to the left of the HVAC controls will also pop out a little. Don't worry it has to in order to get the HVAC control pod out. After it is out just lay it to the side. I wrapped it in a towel while it was hanging there to try and prevent damage.

See the panel on the left is popped out a little.

This is the bottom of the HVAC control pod. I wanted to show you the fasteners that hold it in. These fasteners are also on the radio.

Now you have to remove the four 10mm bolts that hold the radio in. Then give the radio a little tug to pop it out. Again a towel helps prevent damage to the dash and components while doing this.

There is a ton of room back behind the radio so I mounted the PA12-TOY all the way in the back as shown. I used double sided tape to hold it to the HVAC duct in the back.

Plug the PA12-TOY into the radio here.

I ran the I-pod cable from the PA12-TOY to the glove compartment so the I-pod is out of sight from prying eyes. The cable is long enough that I can have the I-pod close to me for I-pod control of the music.

All back together. Take your time putting everything back together. Getting everything just right was a little tricky but overall it went pretty smooth. I don't think it helped I was drinking beer while doing this part.

Well that's it, hope this helps anyone that wants to do this. I like the fact that my I-pod is being charged and no more Aux. input cable in the way.

Does having the full center council effect the removal at all. I want to put my Avic D2 navi in and I am usually pretty good at figuring these dashes out, but all I have been finding is dashes without the full council. I don't have the cup holders there its a pocket. Just wondering. I don't want to pay someone if I don't have to. I also found the "piano" finished dash install kit. That was a pain. Only one company I could find had it.

Just follow the link at the top of the write up. It also shows how to take apart the dash if you have the console. HTH.

Thanks Mickey, yeah man it's pretty easy, just take your time to avoid scratches. It took me a few tries to get it back together just right but it all worked out. The problems started about the third beer.

Link on top no longer works. Can anyone tell me which piece to start with when trying to get to the back of the radio regarding a center console?

Thanks in advance...

Got some time today and trying to knock out 3 mods... one is a 2.5" lift from Bilstein shocks

Checklist:
Ipod adapter
2.5" inch front shocks
Chrome front grill

Well that stinks. I guess I'll have to try and find another link to the info. Glad you were able to get it done. Can't wait to see pics of the lift.

Not sure but the PA12-TOY connector has an auxiliary input on it for XM/Sirius to be hooked to it.

Nice write up Wallygator. I'll be looking forward to getting rid of my aux. cord as well. Did you notice a difference in sound quality?

Big time difference. The quality through the cord pales in comparison. It's close to CD quality sound with the adapter
