What kind of gas do you use?

Just wondering what kind of gas everyone is using. I put 93 but I don't really notice any jump in MPG's

Seems like when I run 93 I get about 1.5 mpg more. I haven't enough tanks yet to say for sure. Anyone else notice a jump. If you crunch the price difference numbers at 2.60 and 2.80 per gallon you have to get at least 1 mpg better to break even. If gas prices were higher like they were then even 1 mpg bettter would make it cheaper to run 93.

When I drove the truck down to Florida back in March I would run one tank @ 87 octane and then the next at 91 octane... The 91 consistently got me 1.5 miles more per gallon. So for the most part its a marginal savings at the pump.

Your truck was not designed to run on 91 octane. Buying higher octane gas is a waste of money. It will not make your truck perform better, go faster, get better mileage or run cleaner. The Octane rating does not relate to the energy content of the fuel, its just how quickly or slowly it burns - higher octane fuels 'explode' less easily. Thats right, premium fuel is harder to combust and needs more compression.
The electronic engine management can compensate for fuel types, so the only thing you are damaging is your bank balance.

Maybe we could make a sticky about the follies of using high octane fuel as this seems to come up every couple of weeks.

91 just because my go cart uses it, my dirt bikes use it, and when I have gas in the tank to share I can. If you think your getting better mileage get the F@#$% off this forum. :]

87 all day long. There is absolutely NO reason to put anything higher in these trucks unless it's modified to the point that it needs something higher. The "I get better mileage on 91" is the biggest crock of $h!* ever. There is ZERO scientific proof of this, because it is simply not true.

I've always burned 87 octane fuels in all my vehicles. Every time I have the oil changed I run a bottle of Fuel system cleaner through my vehicles to clean out the system. Other than that higher octane fuel is a waste of money it doesn't do anything. I have noticed my fuel mileage has gone down lately. I don't have the trip computer in my truck so I don't know but I'm going to hookup my scan gauge to it and see the next trip I take and see what it says.

No difference in mpg's on higher octane. I would know since I do get great mpg's now. The only difference it may have is that you may have a cleaner engine. Having over 74,000 miles on my 07 I did enough testing. The highest mpog I got was 24.9mpg on a 300+ mile trip.

91 octane Shell. This is in So CAl. Other states may have different formulation. Tried 87, 89, Shell, Chevron, Mobil, they all detuned my RCSB. I like the throttle response, driveability, acceleration with the 91 Shell. Lower octane makes my tranny downshifts a lot even with slight acceleration. MPG with 87 octane is lower than 91 on my truck, be it summer or winter.

Art, you subconciously could be altering how the truck reacts. The 5.7 in our trucks have a throttle and a trans that think, yes i said it thinks! lol your engine remembers your driving patterns, so it can better suit your driving style. the dual VVT-i, or Dual Independent Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (the -i) takes into consideration the amount of throttle, the load percentage on the engine, and the speed of the vehicle and then changes how the intake cam and exhaust cam time themselves to the rest of the engine. The Intake and exhaust cam's can advance or retard their timing pretty close to 30 degrees either way! this, along with your ECT-i (Electronically Controlled Transmission with intelligence (-i again) will change how it reacts to your driving so that it protects itself, i.e. (if you hammer it again and again the trans will adjust itself to shift very abruptly to keep from wearing out the clutch packs ect. inside the trans).

I personally own a car that makes ALL the difference in the world what octane you run, my 86 Buick Grand National. i run 4.5 gallons of Sunoco 110 octane and the other 10 gallons of 93 octane. i do this ONLY so that i can run over 20lbs. of boost without detenating the engine. eventually i'll put alcohol injection on and go back to using just 93 octane and turn the boost up even more. ;)

Our 5.7 engine has a compression ratio of 10.2:1 which is fairly high for a stock V8. without the Dual VVT-i and fuel injection mapping capabilities i believe you would need to burn higher octane fuel. i run 87 too ;)

My Two Cents Is, If You Throw In High Octane Fuel From Say Anything Over Half A Tank, Then You Are Starting To Get Into Your Pocket. I Run 93 Bc It Makes Me Feel All Fuzzy Inside Lol. But In All Honesty The Shit Smells Alot Better Then 87. As Far As Numbers Go I Believe That 87 Would Probably Do Better For Mpgs. Why Else Do The Tuning Companies Run 87 For There Eco Tunes.

They now have a "natural female enhancement" pill too. Maybe some women think need to be larger too?

My 4.0L Tacoma ran much better with 91 than 87 or even the recommended 89. 2MPG better and much smoother than with lower octane. I tried the same thing with my Tundra with no difference at all!

87 all the way. I just wish they would build a SC for my FFV5.7L so I could run higher octane and actually gain something out of it! :banghead:

Five refineries serve the San Francisco Bay Area.
I buy my gas at Costco and they use whichever refinery has the best price. Some days they take delivery from more than one refinery. As do the name stations and Costco when one of them is down for mantainance.
Point is; all gas is the same coming out of the refinery. The additive packages go in when it is loaded in the tanker that makes it Chevron with Techron, and so-forth.

Because I drive between 150 to 300 miles a day, I have accurate MPG records and I have never noticed an MPG difference between stations.

Chrysler Newport V8, Fiat 131, Cadillac DeVille, Volvo DL, Accord, Dakota V6, Tundra 4.7, Rover 2000, Mazda RX2 and maybe more...I have driven round-trip between San Francisco and LA.
As I recall I tried a tank of premium gas on one leg of the trip with all.

Result: Worse MPG using Premium. And no improvement in performance.

87 chevron only.

I put 93 in every 5 tanks of gas, I was told it will clean up my valves, Don't know if it's true though. No notice of a gain in mileage running 93, No notice of any power increase running 93
