Another orange peel question - black paint

Hey guys,

Just bought a new Tundra. When I was at the dealership I commented on how shitty the paint looked, and the sales manager said it was standard these days. We talked about it a bit, but I figured it is what it is. It is a new truck after all. Anyway, just curious if the orange peel is as noticeable for you guys as well. Walking around the work parking lot, my car is easily the most noticeable in terms of orange peel (comparing against other toyotas and other manufacturers). The Mercedes in the parking lot are pretty bad as well. Anyway, here is a pic showing a couple of areas. The whole truck looks like this. So, what say you... pretty standard? Shitty end of the regularly shitty paint spectrum? Thats pretty bad dude?

Thanks in advance.

Take it to a professional detailer for a polish followed by sealant.

/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ My trucks looked like crap from dealer . I have a white truck and there was a lot of rail dust on it. Did a proper detail and it looks 100's better.

To pay someone to this is around 1,000$ depending on the area you live in and what they use. If it is a new truck it should be on the cheaper side as they won't have to do as much paint correction.

Water based paints just don't look as good as the older stuff. It's the world we live in.

That is a single coat system. Not base/clear.

My last truck was 202, and until I did a nice correction/polish job it didn't have the depth or sheen I had hoped for. Maybe not as bad, but not as nice as I had wanted it to be...

Also, don't look at it funny, or you will scratch it.

I was just hoping to get a sense of whether or not it was normal, or if it was bordering on a defective paint job. When I bought the truck I asked the dealership if it had been repainted, that's how noticeable the orange peel was. Like I said before, I had a talk with the sales manager about it, and he explained that all the new vehicles are like that. At the end of the day, I bought the truck so it is what it is, but you'd think you could get a decent paint job with a $37k truck.

From some other posts that I found, I see that this is a common thing with the 202 black. I guess next time around I will know not to get non metallic (single coat) paint, and hopefully don't take too much of a hit on resale.

Bring it to me, pack a bag full of cash. I'll fix it for you.

As others have already posted black is a wonky color, and most of the time people aren't happy with the way it looks. That being said a proper wetsand, 2-4 stage polish and a coat of sealant and that thing will outshine anything on the road.

Ask me how I know.

Factory paint these days have orange peels more than, say a decade ago for sure. Wetsanding and polishing could get rid of them or reduce them but I've learned that on a daily driver I don't/can't keep paint in perfect shape. More polishing means taking off more clear or paint. I used to be a perfectionist when it comes to paint work but once I have put my mind down a little I became much more comfortable with imperfection.

I hear ya. The truck is used as my daily driver, scuba vehicle, and for towing a boat. I guess I was just used to the paint of yesteryear and the new paints impart the feeling of value lost when considering the cost of new vehicles.
