Municipal mechanic told me of paint bubbling on nearly new police explorers.

A factor jn not going ford for me was distrust of the aluminum construction and likelihood of corrosion and lifting paint. I spend lots of time on boats and know better than to trust any paint on aluminum. Did ford discover a way to beat that? Wasn't willing to risk it and after talking to a guy who works on municipal vehicles for a living im glad I opted to go Toyota.

Are the new explorers even made with aluminum? Our agency buys about 1000 vehicles a year, probably 60/40 chargers to explorers. It's all low bid, so I'm sure if there is an option for aluminum, we aren't getting it.

The explorers have been way more reliable than the chargers. They're not as fast, and their fuel tank is too small, but other than that they're great. We don't keep ours outside of warranty, but the chargers are constantly having issues.

Holy cheap, 1000 new vehicles a year? they are not used for law enforcement right ? It seems crazy to think they would get the conversion and sell them before warranty expires.

My 1991 Miata has an aluminum hood. Many other makers use aluminum with no issue. Like steel, if the paint is chipped, is where you'll run into trouble

Yes, used for law enforcement. We sell them before warranty because we get more money for them that way. We have one of, if not the best car programs for law enforcement in the country.

I suppose they are probably enough departments in the United States that are grateful to be able to snap these gently used cars at a discount for their less well funded departments.

The hood is aluminum. It was also aluminum on the some of the previous model year explorers. I have also seen several bubble on the lip where the hood meets the grill.

A buddy in Tx says their department is constantly having issues with the Chargers as well.

His went in 4 times in one month for various running issues.

On the bubbling, Chrysler uses aluminum hoods on the mini-vans( Caravan maybe, whatever they call them now). They have had issues with the paint bubbling too.

My dad has one and they replaced the hood as it was that bad and pitting underneath. No chips or dents, just bubbling from underneath.

My old agency had issues with the factory white paint peeling off the crown vics. My new agency has a mixture of explorers and chargers. The chargers are a nice patrol vehicle when they re not having mechanical issues. My charger just went in the shop at 30k miles to have the front end rebuilt due to bad tie rods. We have had issues with the Ford eco boosts building up soot due to the constant idling done on graveyards.

Do these new explorers have custom paint? Lot of gov. vehicles are not factory paint. Mfg spray customer color.
And aluminum vehicles have been painted for over 50 years.

Ours are not custom paint. We buy all different colors because we don't care if we sell to other agencies or the motoring public.

We also don't buy the eco boosts because of the reliability and cost issues.

I loved my charger for handling and speed, but I need the room for all my gear that the explorer provides.

Ford really shot themselves in the foot when they discontinued the crown Vic without a replacement ready. Then the charger got everyone's business and stayed by being significantly cheaper.

Ford has the Taurus now, but they didn't have anything for over a year after they cancelled the crown Vic. Allowing dodge to sneak into the market.

Our agency was all Ford's prior to them cancelling the Vic.

Everyone went vics when the diplomats were phased out. So some are going back. So what? It is not a huge hit on mfgs. With state contracts prices, they make money but it isn't a huge amount.
