OEM Rearview camera results
I just installed the Toyota (OEM) Rearview camera kit on my 2008 Tundra SR5. I just wanted to comment that that was one of the easiest installs I ever did. I am comparing this install to stereo installations, simple electronics installations, locating a 12V wire, etc. Actually, the install was much easier than the above but I can't think of anything as simple.
As long as you have the Toyota installation pdf instruction sheet (located on this forum) the whole process goes very quickly. Since Toyota has prewired and premanufactured all of the mounting holes and connections, it is pretty much plug and play. I had the tailgate camera and wiring done in 10 minutes. The factory wire harness had the body attachment clips already attached to the wire bundle and the Tundra body had the attach points right where the instructions said they'd be. Inside the cab, 6 torx screws later and the headliner comes down. You have to drill a 7/8" hole in the camera installation cavity to get the wire harness thru. Since you detached the headliner, drilling it out with a step drill bit was a piece of cake. The only issue I had was that after you drill the hole and you really want to snap the camera into its cavity, DON'T. Of the six torx screws that hold the headliner to the roof, two of those screws are in that cavity. If you clipped the camera into the cavity, when you are reinstalling the headliner and get to the final two screws, you'll cuss for quite a while. Getting the camera back out of the cavity once you clip it in is a mofo (use credit cards to slide in and disengage the clips). The other thing that slightly paniced me was that the camera plug didn't fit the plug sitting right where I thought the camera attached. I thought "Oh crap maybe the 07' and 08' harnesses are different," but in fact, the plugs are the same, I was looking in the wrong area. The plug you are looking for for the camera is not in the headliner, it is in the front drivers side of the headliner cavity. Also, when you start reinstalling the headliner, the wire from the camera needs to be pushed into the truck side because there isn't much room directly above the camera cavity. All hooked up now, total time 30 minutes. Video is activated when you select Reverse, picture looks good enough, worth every penny!! (I got mine for $450 shipped from ebay) ![]()
