Fuel Octane Level
My manual tells me the octane rating should be 87 or higher. I have 85, 87 and 91 available in the areas I travel. Was wondering what experience all of you out there have had burning different octane levels. Does this have any impact on mileage? What about ethanol blends? I've got an old well used Cadillac that drinks 91. Using it vs. 85 has affected mpg by as much as 20%.
What effect, if any, do you see on performance? I am a new owner of a 2007 Crewmax with 5.7 and 9500 miles. All responses are appreciated. |

imo it doesn't really matter what you put in i use 87 and its good enough why spend 10 20 cents more for the other when 87 works just fine ?

I do remember the higher octane. I've got a brother in the bulk fuel delivery business. He maintains octane ratings have become a bit of a joke. A lot of the time one gets less than is advertised. He also says there is no requirement to advertise an ethanol blend of less than 10% and more gas has ethanol than many realize. I have not read that the Tundra is E85 compatible. Does anyone know this answer?

107 isnt anymore powerful than 87, they are the same, the only difference is the octane level, higher compression motors need higher octane fuel the tundra runs best on 87 thats why its recommended when they say 87 or better that just means you can run higher octane but its not necessary.

I switched from 87 to 91 & seem to get a little more power. 0-60 was 2 tenths quicker with 91.(unofficial timing) I think the computer may keep the timing higher, less chance of knock retard with 91. I can also get 91 at Costco for the same price as 87 at other stations in Colorado.

Though I think it is a waste of money, a few gas stations also carry racing fuel. For example, one of the Valero stations in north Phoenix has a special pump for it.
Also, you can buy high octane aviation fuel at small regional airports, but I'd be careful -- it could damage auto engines that are not designed to run on it. Years ago, I put some in an old motorcycle once, and it really increased the engine top end. However, about 20 miles later, the engine started making strange noises (internal clattering); and I think the extra RPM damaged the bearings or something. Also, it ran extremely hot in the small, air-cooled, 2-cycle engine. Last edited by Phoenix : 06-21-2008 at 04:17 PM. |
