Thanks "notevenclose" ! you sound pretty knowledgeable about this stuff. Now I just spent 30K + on this truck and don't want to put a lot more money into it, but what would a cold air intake cost, approx? And I can't take the cat. converter off, we have emmission tests here, but would Dual exhaust really help with MPG and would it be worth it?

Cold air intakes do work. The main idea here is to cool the inlet air as much as possible by drawing fresh air outside of the engine compartment. Cool air is more dense so you don't have to push the pedal as hard to get power.

Think of it this way: combustion is BASICALLY 25 parts air + 2 parts gas at like 25% throttle. Now, if you have cooler air at the same throttle, it is more dense so now you have 35 parts air. With this extra air, your computer will add fuel(to prevent lean combustion) and make you go faster at 25% throttle...so now you get the same amount of power at, say, 22% throttle with a CAI as you did before without it.
Make sense? Sorry this is kinda technical! There are tons of CAI out there! You're gonna want the one that has the best filter and gathers the coolest air. Until someone does a definitive study USING THE TUNDRA, we may never know which one is best.

Duals wouldn't help enough to offset the cost. Plus, you're gonna have your foot in it so you can hear it!

Not sure about the tundra. But I use to run a Tornado style unit in my Accura Integra about 8 years ago, and it actually did improve HP. Mainly use it for the HP at the track. It does make your intake smaller, but it swirls the air, (hence the Tornado name) which makes the air enter the engine easier. The best example to see for your self is to take a 2 litter bottle of water and tape another empty 2 litter bottle to the opening. Then flip the setup over and watch how long it takes the water to go from one bottle to the next. Next, retrofit the tornado inbetween the 2 bottles and do the same test. The water, with no air hole in the bottle, flows into the bottom bottle with a funnel kind of flow very fast. Not to say this will work with the Tundra, but the application does work to some level. It was only 2 more HP on the dyno, but 2 HP in racing, is more than 0 HP.

I thought I saw this one on mythbusters as well. I understood that it actually made your mileage decrease. Has something to do with aerodynamic drag...

One thing most people don't know about removing a tailgate, (seen this on Mythbusters) When you remove the tailgate, you change the air flow from flowing over the truck and tailgate which it was enginered to do, to flowing over the truck and acctually pushing down on the bed of the truck which increases drag. Very little drag is created by hitting a closed tailgate. Just sit in the bed of a truck while someone is driving and see how much wind hits you, very little I suspect. You create even more drag when you open the back window. Mythbusters did a whole segment on this.

I was typing when you posted notevenclose. You nailed it.

I have only had mine for a week but have checked it twice and I am getting right at 16 mpg driving mostly country roads with a little town driving mixed in both times. Happy with that so far. However, I have the 4.7 V8 not the big boy like most of you.
