Question about traction control....

Today I was out and about at a stopsign in the middle of nowhere....I decided I wanted to see what my truck would do so I hit the button for the traction control. The "auto lsd" light comes on at the right side of the guages and so does the vehicle with the squiggly line behind it on the left. As far as I knew that disabled traction control. Well I punch it from a dead stop and it started to break the tires loose, I could hear em squealing and it got slightly sideways....well at around 20mph the truck literally falls on it's face. Traction control still kicked in, I would imagine it's from the sensors that can detect the yaw motion of the truck. Is there a way to TOTALLY disable traction control on the 07/08 tundras? Thanks in advance.

Brett

EDIT: Let me add I did read the owners manual and from what I gathered the VSC could be turned off by holding the "trac" button down for around 3 seconds. I don't see the VSC light turning off on the dash when I do this though. Is there a chance mine is not operating as it should be?

What you need to do is push the traction control once, the vehicle with the squiggly line behind it comes on with the auto lsd, then press and hold it till the lsd light goes off and the VSC lite comes on, that will disable everything and you can do your burn out. Its also in your owners manual. Hope that helps.

Ty much, just went out and tried it and low and behold it worked this time. Seems like I tried it in the past and it did nothing, maybe I wasn't holding the button long enough.

One more question. I noticed the AUTO LSD light turns off as well, does that mean it will be a 1 wheel peel? I would imagine there is still a mechanical limited slip differential, just the auto lsd helps to "kick in" the manual locking differential?

that's a great question - - my understanding is that the limited slip function is electronic mostly, excepting the fact that tells the brakes to engage on the slipping wheel directing the energy to the other, and please correct me if i've got that wrong. generally, i'd have to say it works quite well in terms of traction, but the two wheel burnout does look good in action!

So after you follow the above procedure of hitting the button once then holding down will it still lock the rear?

Tundras DO NOT have a limited slip differential!!! The rear will NEVER be locked! Toyota's marketing people are either liars or morons. They use what other manufacturers properly call traction control or traction assist. They just apply the brake to the spinning wheel. This does not work worth a crap!

The vehicle stability control (VSC) is for the people who should not be driving, ie. morons who roll Explorers over. I turn it off whenever I get behind the wheel. I will not tolerate the truck dictating to me how much throttle I can have or when the brakes need applying!!!! To turn it off, you must be at a complete stop and hold the button for about 5 seconds.

haha.

I think the traction control works great in some situations. like when trying to pass a car doing 30kms when the roads are ice or snow covered. But when your out driving down back roads it is a pain in the ass.

I do agree with Larry on his first paragraph that manufacturers will do anything to lure uneducated people about trucks to get them in. As for the second paragraph I haven't had my second cup yet Ramoine.

But it seems like there's a warning in the manual to not drive continuously with it off. Maybe I read it wrong or there's nothing to worry about.

sorry if i dont understand but if a rear spinning wheel has the brakes applied and all power is shifted (through the differential) to the other contacting wheel...isnt that exactly what a limited slip does? it appears it is just electric and not a mechanically mediated limited slip.
