Traveling - Non Tundra Question

Hey guys,

first off sorry in advance if posting this non Tundra thread upsets anyone, but I need some advice. I am taking the first road trip from SoCal to Houston, TX at the end of this month. I plan is to drive non stop until I get there. Obviously stopping for gas, and RR breaks. I am driving my 1990 Mitsubishi Montero to TX which I sold to a family member. The Montero is a very strong and good running SUV. I thought about hauling the Montero with my Tundra, but decided not too since I need to be back into CA soon after I drop it off, so Iam flying back to CA the same day I drop it off the SUV.

My question is this. Is it legal to carry a 5 -gallon gas tank inside the vehicle? I have nowhere to carry the tank on the exterior, since the Monti has no roof rack gas tank carrier that hangs on the spare tire. More importantly, is it safe to drive with the 5 gallon gas tank inside the SUV? Since I have never done this type of road trip before I want to make sure i am prepared for anything. I already have my AAA triptix maps, and Im also taking the tool box just in case.

Any advice you can offer is appreciated!!!!

Fumes

Get a good gas can if you're gonna do this!

You'd be amazed where the fumes geet to. Folks buying the Montero may object and you may not remember much of the trip!

USofA has stations every 10 miles, even in the west.

I'd leave the can and watch my guage. Besides it'll keep you awake.

Any gas can is gonna stink! Nevermind what 45 lbs of hardshell molotov can do if the worst happens. The Road to Texas is fairly civilzed...get in and go! (your tires are the weakest link) Happy Trails, and ditch the can.
