Back Up Camera

How's it going. I've already introduced myself in the newbie section, and thank you to everyone for the welcome responses. I just purchased my 08 CrewMax this past Friday and I really like this truck! I bought the Toyota back up camera and thanks to other members I received the instructions for installation since my camera had no instructions. Every step seems pretty cut and dry and easy to handle, but the one instruction I do not understand it the drilling of the hole. I cannot make out where I am supposed to drill this hole and why I am drilling the hole. The last thing I want to do is mess up my truck.

Any help is appreciated!

The hole is to route the wire from the monitor to the connector you're supposed to plut it into. If you didn't drill the hole, you'd have no where to put that wire that comes out of the monitor. Now, when you take down your overhead console, lay it flat in front of you so that you're standing directly in front of it as if you were the rear view mirror. Lay it down so that the beige or grey part of the console is on the counter or whatever you lay it down on. Your kit should of come with a small piece of paper that's cut out in a weird shape. You'll see a circle on it where you're supposed to drill the 7/8" hole. Put that piece of paper on the black plastic directly in front of where the monitor compartment is. The hole should go on the rounded part of the black plastic. Dont worry, you wont see the hole once you put your console back up since it's on the back of the console. I hope that made sense.

If it wasn't such a bitch to line up the little brackets on the console, I'd take it down and take some pictures for you of where the hole goes.

Alright man, there's the best I could do with the tools I have here at work. The red dot on the first pic is where the hole will be once you put the console back up only the hole will be on the back side (not visible)

The second pic is of the front (closest to the windshiled)/ underside (part of the console that goes into the headliner) of the console and illustrates where to put that paper template to drill the hole.

Thanks Syberkriminal, just my luck, my instruction didn't come with any template for drilling the hole! This really sucks! I paid $584 for this item and it didn't even have the instructions.

Oh, definately do it yourself man!!! It's very simple. The hole doesn't have to be percisely where the template says. Just eyeball it from the picture in the instructions. I dont see how it being off to the right or left would affect anything.

Oh and mine didn't come with instructions either, I had to print them out off the net. It did come with the template though.

Go to Sparks TRD site and look up the back up camera to order. On the site there should be a PDF file that you can open that contains the instructions. You can then print them off. Maybe that will clear up some issues or questions you have. Keep us informed. That's the next mod on my list.

That's where I got mine at and printed it out. Just a lazy lousy filing system I have in finding it.
Great post by the way.

Thanks Syber

Syber, thanks again for your help. I installed my back up camera today, took my time, and I only lost one hex screw from the overhead console. It took me about 2 hours, but i did it and what a good feeling to do it yourself. I also saved $135 bucks! Thanks again!
