4x4

In the OM it says that when you are in 4x4 HI that you should not exceed 62mph, i think for about a second when i was in 4x4HI i went past 62mph, could this hurt it( I know its only a second or two ) but can it thanks

I don't see how you could hurt it. Just be sure not to drive on dry pavement in 4X4.

The short version, when both axles are driving, even with open diffs any difference in rotation of the tires due to wear, truning, etc can bind the driveline. When on a wet road, snow, ice, dirt allows some slippage

It all has to do with the gearing in the transfer case. It's not designed to exceed 62 because you start putting undue stress or your gears, like running up to 30 in first gear and holding it without shifting. Yeah, you can do it, but it's not a wise idea. You can also end up blowing your seals that way.

If you went past 62 for only a few seconds, I doubt you did any damage. Just don't keep doing it.

You just missed a simple line in the manual about that. It says that you shouldn't switch into 4WD Hi going any faster than 62MPH. You can go as fast as you want, but remember you can't stop any faster than a 2WD.

I'll have to go back and read the manual I guess... It really says you can go as fast as you want?

That would be a first. I've never had a 4x4 that stated you could travel over 65 or 70 while in 4 Hi without messing up your transfer case, drive-line and seals. Of course these were all locker type 4x4's, not open diffs with auto limited-slip systems.

the manual states do not go over 62MPH. It might be poorly worded in one place, but it also says do not go over 62MPH on the information card on the drivers sun visor

Yeah, that's what I thought.

Common sense should play a factor in this. For 1 most of the time (all of the time for me) when in 4WD you probably aren't going to be able to safely drive 62MPH in the first place. Snow, ice, mud, sand, etc aren't exactly good traction surfaces to be trying to drive 70MPH on.

RTFM, it says do not exceed 62MPH when engaging 4WD Hi range. Just looked at the placard on the sun visor for this info. It doesn't list a max speed for 4WD, but if its anything like my other vehicles the manuals for those state not to exceed 55mph in 4Hi, and not to exceed 35mph in 4Lo.

okay, it was early this morning. I didn't get the manual out. But I did look at the placard (this morning). I just checked again. It says not to exceed 60MPH when engaging (either 2H->4H or 4H->2H). It also has a lower speed for colder temperatures. Doesn't state an overall speed limit.

Myself, I've never heard of an upper max speed limit for driving in 4x4 Hi; I'm only aware of speed restrictions for changing from 2Hi to 4x4 and back. On long road trips where the highway is plowed but snow packed, I've driven upwards of 120 kmh (about 75 mph) in 4x4 Hi in Fords, Dodges, Nissans and now in my new Tundra, and I've never experienced any problems. In fact, I've been driving highway speeds in 4x4 Hi in winter conditions for about 25 years now and I don't ever recall having a problem.
