Got rear ended on the highway today slowing down for a wreck further up the road. His car is much worse for wear than the Tundra, but he still got me pretty good.
Mostly bumper/tailgate damage, but the bumper pushed up into the rear quarter panel, and I just noticed the bed pushed up into the rear of the cab and left a faint outline/scratches.
Given that, do I need to be concerned about the frame being tweaked, or is there enough flex on the body that the bed could push up into the cab w/o frame damage?
I see the pics now. Damn, that sucks!! Sorry about your truck!
My personal opinion is that once a truck has crashed(anything over a fender bender) get it fixed and sell it. The truck more often than not, will not be the same again.
I had an 2005 f-150 that the bedside was backed into/ sideswiped, and it had made the cab of the truck unsquare/twisted. Insurance adjuster and body shop said that it was fixed. They should have totaled it..
Shop around and find a good body shop. One that doesn't just want the work coming through the door.
This reminds me that I still need to switch to Amica insurance. Friend of a friend that has three body shops told me that they were the best when it comes to fixing it right, and with good parts.
Hope you are ok. That looks like a pretty decent impact. I don't know enough about this sort of thing to tell you if the frame could be bent, but consider parlaying this into a set of aftermarket bumpers.
When I was rear ended. The frame rails were tweaked because of the impact on the trailer hitch. So, I would say there is a really good chance you have frame damage.
The body shop that did mine, didn't realize the frame issue until they went to remount the bed and the bolt holes wouldn't line up.
Impact on the hitch had caused frame rails to twist in.
Good news is, they were able to straighten mine and it's never been an issue.
I can't tell from the pictures, but damage looks very similar to when I was rear ended in a 2010 F150 work truck. I was doing 15-20 mph due to an idiot crossing 5 lanes at once about 400 yards ahead. All cars in front were slowing.
Anyways the guy behind me slams into me at 60mph, he was texting on his phone.
His S430 Mercedes was a write off, F150 looked okay, minor bumper damage, some rubbing on the cab from the bed.
Took it to one body shop who said it was fine, just needed a bumper and hitch, boss went to another shop and they actually showed him where the frame "wrinkled". Truck was a write off, boss didn't want to chance it with a weakened frame.
I'm no body shop expert but I would highly recommend getting a 2nd or even 3rd opinion about the damage that can't be easily seen.

I had a similar thing happen, was a left corner impact bent bumper corner, tailgate, broken light but the main issue was that my hitch bent, no damage to frame though. I found a used hitch locally for 150 dollars. Those things are expensive if you buy them new. I thing they run like 1500. I really do recommend you find a really good shop to do it right the first time learned that the hard way.
Tell the insurance adjustor that you want a "diminished value claim" to be covered, especially if there is frame damage. Carfax will show most structural damage has being a safety related issue. There is a warning right on the report that the part that was damaged and repaired could effect the safety and reliability of the vehicle, and that diminishes the amount you can then get when selling or trading in the vehicle, even though the vehicle was repaired. The accident wasn't your fault, so you should receive compensation for that reduced value. It might not be a claim you can make in your state, but it is recoverable in most states.
This is something I probably should already know about, but didn't, so thank you! Is it generally a separate claim than the accident claim and at what point is the diminished value claim filed? Now, or after the repairs are finished?
