Unhappy Frozen Power Windows

Any of you guys/gals living in cold climates having any problems with your power windows getting frozen?

I went out last night to pick up some fast food and as I was approaching the drive-through, I hit the switch to lower my driver-side window and nothing happened. The window was frozen shut. I tried rocking the switch back and forth to see if I could break up the ice and get the window loose but was unsuccessful.

I could hear the motor working and saw the inside door panel flex as the motor strained to lower the window, but it only moved a quarter of an inch. I stopped doing this after about 3 attempts because I didn't want to break something or burn out the motor.

I tried all the other windows, front and rear, and they were all frozen shut. There was absolutely no ice visible on the outside of the window, frame or rubber wiper strip, which means all the ice built up on the components inside the door.

I'm just wondering how that much water could keep dripping inside every door, enough that it caused an ice build-up thick enough to keep all the windows from working. This kind of concerns me as it doesn't sound like Toyota tested in a thaw/freeze environmental chamber when doing their R&D on the the Tundra's design.

No problems with mine. My 2001 Dodge did this every time the weather dropped down in the teens or lower. It wasn't iced up in the doors but rather right around the seal on the outside of the windows. There was no ice visible on my truck either but rather the condensation from running the heater caused the weather seals to just freeze/stick to the window. Kinda like sticking your tounge to a cold metal pole. I got some of those silicone wipes that you put on wiper blades and rubbed the seals with it. That seemed to help. If your internal components are freezing though I have no solution for that.

I'd have to say that we got down to a chilly 42 degrees in SoCal yesterday and no problems here...

My windows freeze closed also. But it is most certianly the glass freezing to the plastic-rubber molding. I can tell when it breaks loose, after the truck warms up some. Havent tried any water repellent yet, but it sounds like a good idea.

(Sorry RUNITHARD could not help it)

cold weather issues

I've had a few times when my windows have stuck. I've wondered about Tundra cold weather testing myself. The solution to all my issues has been to make sure I start it up at least 10 minute or more before leaving. This has certainly put my gas mileage in the toilet, but it helps thaw things out.

I would but I've grown accustom to the altitude and lack of gun fire at night.

That may very well be it. I didn't see any ice along the visible edge of the window wiper molding, but that doesn't mean it wasn't glued to it further down past the edge of the door. I'll try your suggestion about the silicon and see if that does the trick... Or move to Hawaii where it's currently 80 degrees.

Thanks

I had the same thing with my POS Titan...window seals AND door seals. I got liberal with a rag and a bottle of Wax-As-You-Dry. Get it into the guide tracks and both sides of the top 1/2 inch of glass. After a wash ,I mix a whole bottle of the stuff in ~3 gallons of Hot water and go over the whole truck...extra sloppy for for grill, plastic, doorsills. Towel dry and if it's not too nasty outside mist it straight out of the bottle onto rubber seals and lower body panels...polish-up with towels. Scurry my wet, frozen ass back into the house before I wipe-out on-the frozen driveway.

Good suggestion... Especially about, "Getting my wet, frozen ass back into the house before I wipe-out on the frozen driveway." Been-there-done-that. LOL

Thumbs down

I have trouble with my windows freezing up. Today, the front windows would not move but the rear windows would. I used my pocket knife to carefully pry the molding away from the window, but it still would not work. I then put the knife in deeper and it felt like there was a second molding deeper in the door. When I pryed that molding away the windows worked. Toyota needs to do a little more research on these trucks!
