I have changed my own oil in every GM I have owned. This is my first import vehicle ever. I just went out there and crawled under and it will be the first vehicle I take somewhere to get the oil changed.
Guess I'm getting lazy but that's too much crap to take off. lol |

Never Changed oil myself
OK, so I have never changed oil in a vehicle myself. I read the DIY instructions and was able to get the skid guard off. I didn't have a new filter or the tool to remove it so I was just trying to see how difficult it would be for me to get the guard off. I was able to do this and it was a bit of a pain to get back on but I was successful. Now, my question is - should I go ahead and attempt the full oil change on my own having never done it before on another vehicle. I wanted to try it but after reading allot of the posts I not sure if it is a good idea. Any feedback would be appreciated.
I have the 5.7L Tundra -BTW |

You would need to compare what it would cost at your local dealer verses what it would cost you to do it. As you have no prior experience I'm going to assume you don't have a lot of tools, ramps or oil collection pans. It takes a certain investment to get properly set up so that it's not a PITA to perform. If you have a long term commitment to doing your own oil changes than I say go for it. But, it's a messy, time consuming job and laying on the ground in cold weather is not a lot of fun. It gets old fast but does need to be done at your house or the dealer.

Excellently done.
When you were getting oil running to your elbow would have been the best time, but now might be a good time to get a baseline of the condition of the innerds of your engine with an oil annalysis. Then do an analysis about 4 times per 100,000 miles. Here is what I use: ![]() ![]() Oil Analyzers, Inc. Oil Analyzers, Inc. - Oil Analysis Services does analysis of all brands of oil. Helped me get 623,000 miles out of the original engine and transmission. |

Dealer here in Cincinnati charges $80 for Synthetic and $30($40-$10 coupon) for conventional. I bought 2 jug of 5 quart Mobil 1 @ Walmart for $23.74 each and an OEM filter, So you can save almost $40 if you do Synthetic. You only save $5 for regular oil but then you know it was done the way you wanted. I think AutoZone and Walmart has free disposal of oil.

You need the proper filtration, or there is little use using synthetic. The Amsoil Ea oil filter cleans out more, smaller stuff than any other, is rated for 25,000 miles or a year between changes.

just did my 1st oil change this evening... wow, what a frickin joke. why didnt toyota just put an external filter on like 95% of the other vehicles out there. i got oil all over myself, the ground, and my truck. when i stuck that little nipple thing in the bottom of the filter to drain it before removal, i got splattered in the face.
then i went and got a 65mm filter wrench while the oil was draining. came home, it wouldnt work. it was too large. but it was one that was kind of like 2 sizes in one. it said 65/67 on it. it was just a cheepy, so i thought id go get a good one. so i went to a different auto parts store, they didnt have a 65. so i go to the THIRD store and get a 65, take it home and it still doesnt work. still too big. it seemed like it fit tight when i slid it on, but as soon as i tried turning it it would skip cogs and just spin. so i said screw it, grabbed a channel lock pliers out of my tool box. and wow was that thing on there tight. i busted my balls even with a large channel lock. i dont know if it was over torqued from the factory or what.....but damn. when i put it back on, i just tightened it as much as i could with my hand so it isnt so damn hard to take off next time. i took it for a spin around town afterwards, and it isnt leaking. so hopefully "hand tight" is good enough. question: where are you guys getting your mobile 1? i got 3 5qt jugs of 5w 20 at walmart for about $24 a piece. know of anywhere cheaper?

HAHA, yeah it's messy. Same thing happened to me bro. Dont know about the Mobil 1. When you started draining the pan did it splash oil out of the drain pan and onto your front right tire and wheel?
