Spray in all the way...I have the rhino lining spray in on my 2008 tundra. A guy up the road from me just got rid of his 2008 tundra because his bed rust to hell. Cross members were shot. He had the plastic drop in. No signs of visible rust on mine so far.
What does the cargo area of the bed have to do with the crossmembers underneath rusting out???
That's right, nothing.
Most beds rust from the bottom up. I have seen beds with no liner all scratched to hell and with plastic drop in's both rust from the underside up.
Only difference is when you have a good spray in, it holds the beds shape while underneath it is gone.
I want a spray in, but my drop in is fine, I have lifted it up and it is still not worn through the paint, and it came with the truck. Eventually I might remove it and get a spray in.
I have the spray and I think that is the way to go. I've had both.
I do miss the softness of the drop in. My knees hurt against the spray in. I need to get a bedmat for the spray in. My spray in also gets a little tacky when it gets really hot.
OK , you guys have me convinced , Spray-In bed liner , IS THE WAY TO GO .
now , question # 2
If you were looking at a 2015 Tundra TRD Pro
and
YOU had a choice ;
1) Buy the TRD PRO with the FACTORY SPRAY-IN bed liner
or
2) Buy the TRD PRO with no bed liner and take it to a LINEX dealer
What would you do ?
I've got the Toyota spray in and I have scratched it down to the paint once. Not too noticeable. Never had a linex but they say they are pretty much indestructible. Don't know for sure. Just my experience with the Toyota spray in.
Spray in for sure - the plastic drop-ins arent grippy so things like to slide around and clank around in the bed. Who knows how many I've seen laying in the median of the highway because they flew out of the truck .They also slowly rub the paint off the bed surface. allow moisture to collect under it and moisture and bare metal = rust . Spray in liner is the way to go , moisture tight, rubbery grippy surface and deadens sound too. Usually a good feature on resale value too.
I think the only difference between a Toyota spray in and a Line-x will of course be cost difference and guarantee . Thats up to you
One just to has to look at some older trucks with drop in liners, to see what poor condition they're in and how awful they look. I just had my truck bed sprayed with Line-X standard since I have a Bakflip cover. I don't know how good Factory spray in bedliner is.
But I know Line-X comes with a "lifetime" guarantee and it's pretty good. I'm thinking of getting my side bars done in line-x also.
As already stated, depends on cost of Toyota spray-in but I would go for the tried and true Line-X (particularly Premium to resist fading). I don't think Toyota has been offering the spray-ins for long and the dealerships don't likely have much experience yet 'installing' them.
If you can do it, go for the LineX Premium to prevent fading. We've had it on our Tundra for about 5yrs now and the shine is still there. It's held up great and worth the money IMO.
There has only been a 1000 threads on this subject. Lots of people say spray and as many say drop in. Pick the one you want. Line x is very expensive paint and does an ok job. It isn't going to hold things in from flying out any better than a drop in. You bounce and velcro is the only thing that might help.
I laugh at all the lifetime guarantee quotes on a bulletproof product. If it were that rugged, why would anyone care about warranty? They wouldn't. But deep down they know the stuff fails, chips or wears off. Stains that don't come off.
The complaints about rust underneath are on old other brand trucks that are beat and not maintained. Even on those brands if they had rinsed it once a year, it would have been fine.
Most people who spend on the spray only keep their truck for a few years, so they spent a lot for nothing. Other than a crew truck that got beat from day 1, I bet there is but a few trucks ever that rotted through that had a liner in 5 years.
I have a drop in liner in my 08 Tundra (97500 miles) and it has had the paint rubbed off for a while now. Liner was factory from new. I have a 2000 Dodge 2500 (don't laugh it's a plow truck) that has the spray in liner with elevator weights in the bed. That liner is as tough as it gets, throw anything in the bed and no damage gets done to the bed.
+ 1 on the Line-X Premium. It looks so nice that I bought a rubber mat to put between it and my trash cans when going to the dump so I don't scratch it at all.
I like to pay money to protect the things that are supposed to protect my bed....
:lol5:
That is about like getting your balls snipped, and wearing a trojan while doing it.
Trying to keep it as clean as possible, but really??? You have a bed mat just to protect how the line x looks?????
Unless you are driving around with rock salt in the bed and throughly washing underneath twice a week in winter, the bed will NEVER rust from the topside down.
I install salters, along with the plows, and too many trucks come in and the bottom is rusted out, including the supports, yet the bed from the topside looks fine.
Everyone here seems so hell bent on preventing rust, yet if 20 people with spray in's that live in the salt belt go out and lay down and look up underneath the truck I bet at least 5 will find the crossmembers are starting to rust on their 07-12's.
I may be the only Tundra with both. The only dent was when the liner was out and the linex was in. And I've thrown a lot of stuff in mine. the linex is stained and the resident expert has no solution.
I got Line-X sprayed on because I disliked the scratches in my truck bed and while I could've gone with a cheaper DIY product, I decided Line X would be better. I don't live in a salt belt area, although I do live in a rain belt area. So I'm not concerned with it rusting underneath and I like the way my truck bed looks now and not have to cringe seeing all the scratch marks on a brand new truck, even if it's was the truck bed.
I have linex platinum in my truck. Almost a year ago. I spent a months researching spray in liners and went with linex. For me it was not much more to go to the platinum over the premium. Get atleast premium for the fade resist.
