Hi TundraTalk, I just recently sold my 2002 Tundra 4X4 Limited and am pining for a new Tundra replacement, however I want it to be DIESEL Tundra, any news on the release date/ prospect of a Diesel Tundra? Thanks, Steve RenoNV
Would still rather have a toyota diesel than a cummins. But I completely understand that so many american truck buyers are herp a derp and look for the cummins badge.
I believe it will come but not any time soon. When it does happen I too would like one. I would probably prefer to have a in-house diesel if given the choice.
And a lot of people are switching to Ford because they're tired of their Cummins falling apart. My company did. We started with six 6.7 Cummins, and not one is left in the fleet. None were sold, either. They just died out.
Toyota is not going to spend a ton of money re-engineering their own diesel technology that is compliant with the entire rest of the world to comply with idiotic American standards. Cummins or anyone that is already active in this market will be the supplier....if it happens.
I seriously doubt the cummins just "died out" unless there was some serious neglect! Most people I meet in the drag or pulling world actually rip out the garbage engine ford sells in favor of a cummins. Now if your talking about the truck falling apart thats a different story. I would like to know where your info comes from.
It makes me laugh at the over rated comments.....really I just lol. Don't get me wrong I love toyota's and always will but the cummins will only make them better! Show me one toyota engine that has over 1300 ftlbs of wheel torque, gets 18-19 mpg and accumulates over 300k in miles with countles pulls and 1/4 mile runs.
The info comes from me. I witnessed this first hand. We work our trucks. The Dodges were a part of the same maintenance program the the Fords are. The Fords have their issues, but nothing like the Dodges did. The trucks did fall apart, but we had more issues out of the motor than anything. Blown motors, blown turbos, fans falling off, you name it.
Just because a lot of people have had good luck with them doesn't mean that a whole lot of others haven't.
LOL! Cummins is not junk. I drove a Dodge diesel for 9 years, and it was every bit of the truck my new Tundra is, and a lot more in a couple of areas.
As others have said, Ford (Navistar) diesels are known in the diesel world to be junk. I work for UPS, and we have plenty on the Cummins 6.7's, but have "retired" all the navistar 6.0's.
Just wait until a Cummins shows up in a Tundra. They'll be people dumping their gassers left and right, because the Cummins will have more power and get better mileage. You'll also be able to bomb it to about 600hp. It will be real hard to sell the 5.7 that gets 13 mpg when a Cummins enters the lineup- if it ever does. I have doubts.
The Cummins has ALWAYS been hooked up to this trailer since Day 1 (2008). It has NEVER been unhooked from this trailer since the day he bought it. 400k ALL TOWING miles. Impressive to say the least IMO.
Edit: as you can tell, it's never been WASHED since 2008 the day it left the lot. But the Cummins is strong. LOL
I have to agree a lot of people love the Cummins and swear by it. By the time Toyota puts a diesel in their trucks, it will most likely be the cummins but I don't think it'll be any time soon. However when it does happen, my truck might need replacing and if it does I'll pick up the truck payment and own one as well
This is important. What good is a heavy diesel that will lower payload if they don't come out with a HD truck.
I'd rather see a HD truck with higher payload before the diesel because we already know the 5.7 can pull a load. Once they create a HD truck then we know they are serious. (Yeah I know the truck is under rated, but lots of companies and other folks need the rating(s) to make the purchase.)
And I said it was over rated. I didn't say Cummins was a horrible diesel engine manufacturer. A company can be great and still be over rated. It's comments like yours that make me say that. People act as though they're infallible, when they're not. That means that most people over rate them. It's a simple enough concept.
By no means is any company perfect! How many cummins did you guys run? A dozen out of the million + that have been made? Thats a very small drop in the bucket. I'm a diesel mechanic btw. I work on all types daily! The percentage of ford to dodge to chevy that comes in for major engine repairs is by far Ford. And once again I will state NO company is perfect but one has a far better track record.
It's funny how good ford diesels are. The fact they had to cancel with navistar and design a whole new engine because the last one was such pile of crap.

I know a guy on the Tundra board and it will get a hinco Diesel engine in 2017 for sure and maybe 2016. I was talking to him the other day and it's still going to happen. It will be 1/2 ton. This is what he told me!
The more people "Roll Coal" the more emissions stuff will be added to stop people from being able to Roll Coal.
