Free HP mod, stock Air box lid charcoal filter delete!
Note: I am making this thread because I spent an hour searching for info on this with no luck. Special thanks to Dez and sxd for telling me to rip it out
Remember, if you install any CAI or after market intake, you will be with out this charcoal filter. So why keep it!
Time: 30 sec
1. Pry off the charcoal filter with a flat head screw driver. Start with a corner, then just it just pops off with little force
Example of how it pops off: Note: No need to cut the filter.
2. Test drive.
The charcoal filter is very restrictive. Using a can of compressed air, blowing through the charcoal filter cuts the air down to only a trickle. Just look how thick this 7 layer beast is:
Wow, what a diffrence!
Loud, deap throaty sound up front!
Increased throttle response!
Next steps: Im guessing, find and install a drop in filter. Then dyno this vs a common CAI.
You know with a little smoothing out of the lid, im sure there will be more of a gain, all those ridges do is slow the air flow to make it quieter, I will take a dremel or grinder to mine soon and update everyone.
.......don't see how it can be restrictive as these trucks run lean....ULEV II. According to K&N, airflow is only 1-2 mph across the filter element at 70 mph. Again, if the factory intake was restrictive, it would be causing a rich operating condition.
Removing it will make the intake a little louder. I popped mine out after about a month of owning the truck. Supposedly the charcoal is there to clean any backflow gases when you turn the truck off.

Yeah I just did it! Intake is a little louder and seems to be just a little peppier. May be my imagination though. Very easy mod. Took me about 10 minutes.
