Backup Camera Install ???

Just got a backup Camera and I have a few questions for you guys. I have an 07' DC with the tow package. So my DC is pre-wired for the back up camera.
I got the Rostra 250-8306 3.5" Monitor Assembly. This is going be just a plug and play install. The question I have is about the camera. I got the universal camera with the standard Red/+, Black/-, Yellow-Video+, and the Gray-video-.
My question is can I just splice the above backup camera wires into the prewired plug in the back of the truck.

Camera Wires Prewired Plug
Red/+ to Black 12V+
Black/- to White 12V -ground
Yellow/Video+ to Red Video +
Gray/Video - to Gray Video -

Thanks

Jeff

I can't see why you can't. The only thing I will state is that you disconnect the battery. Or you will get what I got an upside down pic. When that happened I decided to just go drink a few beers and tackle it the next day. The next day it reset itself. I wonder if I had the beers to early.

Can anyone tell me where this plug is for the camera? I am installing an Alpine In dash screen and a universal reverse camera. I have a DC as well with a tow package.

Well, I just finished the install. Everything went accordingly. I ended up cutting the stock harness for the camera. I called Rostra and they wanted $40 plus shipping for the harness that will directly plug into the prewired harness. I just soldered all the wires together and heat shrinked all the connections. I then put zip tied everything together.

I mounted the camera on my license plate. I made an opening right below the letter "a" of the word "California". Put the camera through and epoxy the back. That way, my image will be more centered. This Rostra camera has a 160* view angle.

BUMP for Help Please.

I just purchased a universal camera and the only wires that came with the camera are Red +, Black -, and the yellow coaxial cable. I looked underneath my truck and my prewired plug also has the Black, White, Red, and Gray. So, I gutted a spare video coaxial and I noticed it had an outer coating of wire too. See image below for example. (The "metal shield" are strand wires and the "centre core" are also strands.) So my questions are:

1) On the yellow coax, would the center core be the video positive? and the metal shield be the video negative?

2) If the metal shield is not the video negative, do I need to hook up a negative?

3) How did you guys with universal cameras wire to the factory harness?

Thanks in advanced... I'll keep searching as well in case there's already a thread on it. So far, this thread is all I found.

EBT,

Yep to number 1. Number 2 is a big no. Search my other forums on the number 3 issue for a splice into the factory harness in the passenger kick panel. I posted pics and general diagrams I took from other posts. Easy as pie. If you need additional details, I have the diagrams I could send you (at least for a Tundra that was installed with a factory cam... not sure if the wires exist on a non-fact cam model but I believe they do).

Anyway you could post a link to the other forum? And could I get a copy of the diagram?

Thanks

Okay, hooked up monitor and camera but encountered another problem. It seems I'm only getting 6.5v to the camera coming from the stock backup cam connector, which isn't strong enough to power it. When I test wired it to the tow plug (12v source), it works great!!! Is the 6.5v to the stock camera connector location normal? or am I grounding somewhere?

By the way, thanks for the previous response LTDTundra.

EB,

The 6.5 voltage output for the factory cam wiring is correct. Not sure if you've seen this link before but it may help as well:

Thanks again LTD.

Although I'd love to utilize all 4 pins off the factory connector, looks like I would only use the video pins and tap a 12v source elsewhere.
