idatalink maestro with harness. also the kenwood dds9903s is nicer than any of the pioneer units we carry.
the maestro will retain all stock controls including the oem ones in the radio for the lights. it will also give you obd2 trouble codes, custom guages and tpms info.
I can't find much info on the DDS9903...did you mean ddx9903?
Would this unit work with OEM rear cam and microphone? The maestro seems like a must have based on what little I just read about it on their site. Do you think it's better to buy a non-nav unit and have a maestro use maps on your iphone, or to buy a nav unit?
I just got the Kenwood DDX9903S today with the full Maestro setup, Ill post pics when its done to show all it retains. So far the only thing I'm losing over the stock head unit is XM, but I'm building an SQ system and satellite radio is absolute crap for sound quality. For streaming I use Tidal Hifi and it sounds fantastic!
I'm looking at the pioneer 4200nex vs the 9703 kenwood, why do you think the kenwoodd are better? The 9903 seems to have 5v vs 4v of the 9703, I don't find resistive screens any different than the capacitive. Not sure those two features are worth 100 bucks
Are there other things?
One thing that would drive me nuts is doesn't the warning screen stay on the kenwood every time until you push the close button? The pioneer goes off after a few seconds
After you turn them on or start the truck the notice on the screen, from what I have seen etc it stays on until you push the button on the screen and doesn't go away until you do
What kind of sound adjustments do the kenwood have that the pioneer doesn't ?
I am currently shopping the two, I like the dedicated Spotify control on the pioneer
Do you see anymore problems with either one as far as faluire rate?
I ordered the S-TO2 and UT-02 elsewhere since Crutchfield doesn't carry them for some reason. It says the S-TO2 will plug into the factory XM antenna and into an aftermarket receiver. Does that mean Id still have to buy the separate box but can use the OEM roof mounted antenna? @spider2k
Personally I would go with Pioneer the screens res is soo much better vs Kenwood. I had a Z1 Hdd navigation when it came out in 2006 and i looked at the kenwood and honestly during that time period Pioneer had more going for it. I didn't like the kenwood menu and screen it looked too washed out.
I was a die hard Alpine user for most of my life. Alpines quality has gone down the tubes IMO and Ive found the Kenwood Excelon units to be very good. I have dark tinted windows and a light tint on my entire windshield so I don't have issues with washout.
I have kenwood 571hd in wife's car that has some annoying Bluetooth bugs so I am a little cautious about another kenwood although inner the newer ones are better hardware and software
the 9903 has a better display than any unit we have. while the resolution on all the units are pretty much the same it tends to "pop" more due to the capacitive overlay. none of them are higher res anyways unfortunately which is kinda silly.
pioneer has had more recalls and bad units that ive seen in the last couple of years.
the over complicated kenwwod menu from hell is MUCH improved. it was the single most hated thing about them imo.
yes you need to have a separate satellite tuner for ANY current radio. its the same unit for any brand now at least. plus you get the $69 back in a rebate.
current ddins are very different than even a few years ago. best thing to do is go try them out. pair your phone up and see what you like best.

Thanks, I figured that was the case. Figure I might as well get it for road trips and I already have the factory antenna mounted. Didn't want to have to install a second one.
I agree 100%. I just ended up getting the adaptor because it was $20, the XM receiver is free after rebate and I already have an XM account for my wife's 2017 Subaru Forester Turbo. So in my mind it was worth the $20, I definitely wouldn't pay for the box or subscription otherwise.
I like to see what that looks like on a 2014 plus wow don't care for the fit and finish on the gen 2 aftermarket installs much less didn't like that interior at all. The whole trim ring on the 2014 plus I've not seen much of are they better looking for pasted Toyota models?
I got both dash kits for my 2016, the matte black and the gloss black. Just looking at them the gloss looks like an exact match of the Black "Tundra" plate below the radio.
I bought the 4200 and a test fit have some extra factory plugs. One has to be the antenna, and I'm guessing one is the microphone, but don't know what the third is. I'm guessing I just need an adapter for the antenna. I have the maistro RR unit. Thoughts on where the other two plug in?
So with an aftermarket HU you lose the factory mic? That's a bummer... last time I had a remote mounted mic I was always asked if I was in a convertible or if I had the windows down....
I find the mic that came with the new 4200 to work better than the OEM one, bluetooth calls are better all the way around, plus you don't have to stupid stock HU running everything through one top left dash speaker.
A few issues with this install I'm trying to work through...
1) I have all the idatalink / maestro kits and optional parts. I can't seem to find or understand how to hookup what I assume is the FM antenna. It looks like a 1/4" hole in the back right of the HU, but I see nothing like this in the adapter kits. What am I missing?
2) HU will not turn off when the key is removed. Read somewhere it could be the data read from the diagnostics port, but that removed it still won't turn off. I can click the unit off button on the radio, but obviously a long unnecessary step.
3) Can't flash with 1.05, menu is always gray'd out (IT guy, so bypass the obvious issues heh).
1) None of the idatalink or maestro come with the right antenna kits for the FM radio. Ironically, it looks like the scosche paperwork referenced a part that might work, LSAAB.
2) Still have this problem. I can only assume it's a wiring issue. I have yellow/black open on the radio side, and pink, yellow/black, yellow/green open on the adapter side. yellow/black and yellow/green are suppose to be open according to the paperwork for this radio, but I am missing a pink to pink wire, which exists on the adapter side, but not on the radio. What did you guys hook that up to? It is listed as "VSS (vehicle speed sensor)", so not sure it has anything to do with the radio not turning off unfortunately.
3) Reason for not flashing, after having to search the internet for nearly 25 mintues.... YOU HAVE TO ENGAGE THE PARKING BRAKE??? After this was done, no problem. This is not called out only any paperwork I could find.
It took a little work to get the components right. In all honesty Crutchfield has all the right parts. Amazon was a little cheaper but also let me order the wrong face plate. I picked up the antenna connector locally.
You can't reuse the Toyota microphone and if you have a cable to the factory USB in the console by the shifter it won't be used either. Enjoy doing it myself but in hindsight I probably should have just paid the local shop to do it.
That said love the radio. I also purchased the bypass separately so that video played while the vehicle is out of park. And added a miracast adapter to the HDMI which allows me to send anything from a Samsung Galaxy S7 to the screen to be mirrored. You can get Waze or YouTube on the device now. I'm only slightly disappointed with Android auto, but that's because locks the phone down and I'm one of these guys that checks his e-mail when the light is red.
Functionality is fantastic sound even without replacing Factory speakers is a vast Improvement volume is higher and better quality.
One kind of slick feature is the face of the radio has an adjustment on there so that you can push out the bottom of the radio and make it flush with your dash. If you notice the two pictures I've attached when it's off it slides back in.
Once I had everything it took me about 20 minutes to get it installed. But that was three times test fitting it and checking for functionality before finalizing. I spent about an hour and a half on the workbench soldering Pioneer harness to the Maestra. Once you have everything it just snaps together. I have an iPod connected to USB one and a cable for my Samsung Galaxy S7 connected to USB 2. I purchase USB extension cables to give myself some extra flexibility. The iPod is just sitting in the glove box. There's room through the access panel to get to the back of the dash from the glove box. With a little patience you can also run the OBD2 reader down to the plug without much problem. I really even didn't have much challenge running the microphone along the a pillar. There was enough flexibility in the trim that I was able just to push it behind.
You can use your OEM usb plug with your aftermarket radio with the right adapter.
I goes from the new HU USB to the plug that was plugged into the stock HU.
I used this one.
A few months ago I got the NEX8201 (the 1 being a backup camera that I didnt use, otherwise its the same unit as the 8200)
works rather well and with the maestro module I not only keep all the functions of the factory radio but am able to see individual tire pressure. thanks to the dealer I know they rotate my wheels as the position is not correctly displayed. As for the Navigation updates being every year, thats the case with Toyota's navi too. I find the head pioneer is ok but Google and Waze is better at traffic prediction. The bluetooth quality was a step up from factory but is unusable for me as theres too much road noise passed on to the other side of the call. I opted for a headset and now no one can tell Im even in a vehicle. The bypass can also be done with the press of the bottom left corner while source is powered off. no need to buy a kit. I had the Apple and Android usb's extended and mounted in the center console along with the HDMI. my backup camera on anytime mod still works obviously. The sound is much better definitely noticeable. I have an alpine 5 channel and replaced front and rear separates. My advice from now on is to not fool with the factory unit trying to compensate for the bass roll off and the factory crossover with LC devices, its just a waste of time and money.
I know I had some connectors that were not used.
I can't remember what they were.
