A51893 USB Port Not Working

Hi all. I have a 2013 Crewmax with the A51893 factory stereo manufactured by Panasonic. The USB port really sucks. I have yet been able to plug in a thumb drive and been able to play mp3 files. I looked through the manual. I have tried two different thumb drives formatted to Fat32 file system. I load one mp3 file on drive. I get USB error or error 5 messages. I start the truck and try to let it recover and nothing plays. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to take to dealer? Is there a firmware update for this stereo? I hate this stereo compared to my 2012 Camry LE factory stereo. Help!
