so there are threads all over the place about roof racks, custom roof racks and yada yada yada. thought i would start a general thread for crewmax roof racks. if you have one, and feel comfortable doing so, name the brand and a price range and also how you like it.
Asked a local weld shop about building me a rack like the one on Ox's Tundra, they gave me an estimate of 500-800 just looking at pics. Thinking about it! If I knew how to weld I'd do it myself...all I can do is turn wrenches.
im the same way, ive got a buddy who is a union welder, never seen someone weld as cleanly as he does, he also welds for our local antique/vintage harley shop. i might go buy the materials and have him mock it up and do it, that is the best looking rack ive seen but 2500 dollars from WCC is rediculous
Been searching for the same thing for awhile and keep coming back to the defender racks.. not that they are bad but if someone can build a rack like OX's I would be in!
^ thats not a roof rack, just a light bar, the light bar on that truck looks similiar to the front of the defender racks, i dunno if its just me , but those defender racks look huge around the light, where as the "ox rack" has the front angled and it follows the windshield curve, the sides arent to high, its not too high off the roof, and it doesnt mount on those stupid ass cross bars, only on its own feet.
another thing i have been introduced to is the racks at rhino rack, they make platform racks and mesh baskets, but cant find something that really meets my needs/wants
Im currently working on a set up right now for my truck. Its not a "roof" rack but more of an above my truck bed rack.
I am installing a Thule Xsporter utility rack with a Surco S5060 safari rack above the bed of the truck. I will mount a spare 37 on the safari rack.
Rack should be here today and I already have the Thule.
Ill get pics when it is installed. It might be a while. I have to fabricate some mounts for the tire, rack to rack, and I think I am going to reinforce the rack some more to add a little more support for the weight of the 37.
Take a look at the surco racks. best priced on amazon. I looked at a lot and these were best priced and could easily be upgraded, altered, reinforced for my needs.
I have a double cab so I can't pull a measurement... What's the measurement from the front windshield to the start of the contour of the rear roof line. just as it starts to turn down to the rear glass?
for some reason my comp wont let me post the better pictures of this rack that i have.
i want a rack that is:
low to the roof (but still has enough room for me to open my sunroof)
mounts using feet in the rain gutters and does not use rails
something with low side walls but high enough to keep stuff in
front light bar that follows window contour (ie isnt sticking way out like defender light bars)
-note how the top of the front light bar is even with the top of the rest of the rack.... that is key
mesh bottom
tubular not square tubing

I measured and will post the crummy pics in a little. It looks like at the highest point it's an inch and a half high. So 2 inches will clear it
the pictures are below, that 1 1/2 is from the top of the roof to the top of the sunroof when it is open, now if i measured from the rain gutters, looking across the roof to the top of the sunroof it looks like it would be 3 inches but i couldnt get the measurement as i only had one set of hands
thanks for the pics.... When you have a second will you also measure the distance from the center of the windshield to the rear of the roof? just to the point where the roof starts to bend down? I've been told the CM are 8" longer in the cab area than a DC but have never measured it.
ok just had a chance to have my dad help me, we put a measuring tape on each sides rain gutter and held a piece of string across to find out how high it would need to be all the way across in order to clear the open sunroof, looks like the bottom of the rack would have to be just under 3.5 inches high to clear sunroof with a little room to play, less than 1/4 of an inch.
nice thanks.. if the lower portion of the basket is completely flat all I need is 2" in the center to clear the sunroof correct? the 3.5" measurement is the height just above the gutter?
The 3 1/2 inch measurement is with the ruler sitting on the rubber in the middle of the rain gutter. 2 inches in the center of the roof will clear the open sunroof by 1/2 an inch. Ill measure the length of the roof tomorrow. Unless someone else gets to it sooner.
camburgs support truck holds four 37" tires on the back fuel cans jacks and other junk its built so you can remove it after the race really easy. Also they just build this F250 to replace the tundra as a support truck for the trophy truck
thanks for posting up these pics... Any idea what the price is on the tundra rack? It looks pretty square, is it specifically designed for hauling tires or is this the design they use on their trucks before the new F250 design?
companies love building products without large radius bending. cuts down on production times and look like the old Volvo's. Square and blocky.. the sad thing is they look very universal and are loud.

Tell Us what you're looking for in the ultimate rack. everyone's ideas will help design the best most functional rack.
I think the coolest function of the ox roof rack is how the had the front light bar come down the windshield and made the top part od the light cage tilt forward. That way the rack was an even height all the way around
I mainly like the roof rack light holder design of Ox's truck. Only if they can weld onto my current Yakima Megawarrior basket would be awesome! Light hangs more forward and down abit to avoid glare at night.
I'm with blushin' theat blue FJ looks sleek, slim and the integrated lights are nice. The big 6" or 8" round llights looks out of place (unless you do a lot of baja stuff or rally races).
On another note, would aluminum tubing work for something like this? It would save on the overall weight of the rack on the roof, but still maintains the ability to hold a load? Just a thought.
When al this comes together, I might be interested. . .
I'm with you on that.. I'd like to see the light when they are on and gone when they are not in use. Quieter too
Aluminum what def be lots lighter over all. up the cost quite a bit though.
yeh im thinking the same thing, a steel rack would be heavy as shit. aluminum would be great and obviously raise the price substantially. integrated lights would be kind of cool, but with that being said i think the lights would have to be closer to the windshield on the tundra than they are on that fj, being set back so far would look goofy on our trucks
and with a setup like the fj, you could also make it possible for someone to run one of rigid industries led light bars instead of 4 separate offroad lights
If the design has slight curves like the roof does it would increase the strength and there for thinner walled tube could be used. the last thing we need is to feel top heavy, not good
What if the the rack came down in front of the windshield keeping the same curve as the glass and basicly was a visor when the lights were not in use and opened when the lights were needed? this way the front would not be a big gaping tunnel to trap the wind but with it closed it would allow the wind to pass up over and around?

Function should be the predominant force and then build it aesthetically.
I have a question about the lights. The WCC screwed up by putting the lights on the windshield. Then they put the bar on top. Well if you hit something, you may save the lights but bust your windshield. What does the top bar do? It doesn't support the lights and it doesn't protect the cargo. It looks like a noise creator. Plus it looks like there is nothing to hold back stuff if you had a sudden stop.
the top bar is actually connected with braces to the rest of the rack
