Body Mount Trimming

What is the disadvantage of trimming the body mount. I know a lot of people don't like hacking up metal on their trucks but what is the structural issue. I don't have my truck yet so I can't see it in person.

Is it a major support point that could fail if trimmed?

from what i've seen i highly doub that trimming will do much of anything other than allow clearance. its simply trimming.

Anyone got pics of that actual before and after trimming? Exactly where did you guys trim on the body mount?

not only trimming it. You really are reinforcing it by boxing the side in with a plate making it stronger than stock

Let me try to scare you. The position of that mount is part of the crash absorption designed into the truck. When the truck impacts something hard the wheel will fold back into the mount, it then transfers the energy to the frame behind (the mount), which causes a buckle in the frame... all along the way soaking up the energy. Off the top of me head I can't see where trimming it would be a big deal.. it should retain its function just fine.... I write this as I run an airbag steering wheel from another car and Recaro seats w/o side airbags.

Great post. I have a much better understanding of this now. I'm not sure I would try it but I don't think I would be bothered if a good welder did it for me. That thing sure seems to be in the way.

There is definitely more to it than I expected. I am going to try some +35 wheels first and hope that works with 34.5" mickey Thompson's and the 4" pure performance lift.

I have the pure performance lift with 35s on stock trd wheels for now... No rubbing. I want to get a lower offset wheel soon but im so nervous about just cutting my frame up like that. Its bad enough you have to drill out your spindles for the lift...

Yo guys, those pics of that FJ are way overkill for us. If you are running 35s you should only have to trim a little if any. Those pics even freaked me out!

wow that pic from FJ forums looks like they cut out a big chunk out. Most pics i've seen here do some trimming but nothing compared to that pic. It just doesn't sit right with me to cut that much metal off...

I have 37s with a 6" lift, i'm glad I didn't have to cut anything! I just had to take my inner wheel well shields out but I plan to install back on one day....

Dont worry guys. We all do it on our FJs and no one has a problem. The body mount chop is a great way to get more clearance and no one has reported anything wrong.
