Question 4x4 10 miles a month???

I read that you should drive at least 10 miles a month to keep your 4x4 parts lubricated??? I also read that you should never use your 4x4 unless you need to so that you do not mess something up? Any advice???

Thanks

I have owned 4x4's all my life, and I cannot say that I have ever heard that. Depending on the weather, some years it seems like I never take mine out of 4 wheel drive. If you do not abuse your 4 wheel drive, you should not have any problems with it.

Where you damage stuff on 4X4's is locking in and trying to turn corners on dry pavement. If you are driving straight down the road shifting into four wheel will not hurt anything. My last DD for the past four years was a 1987 Wrangler. 170,000 miles on it and it still runs great. I only shifted into four wheel once every two or three months but used it alot in the winter. Still original motor, transmission and transfer case.

These trucks have so many safety nannies, I find I don't use 4x4 unless I absolutly have to.

I guess it is all about location. I always wondered why people bought 4x4's if they never intended to use them? If it is for show... add a lift.

I think the manual says you can drive at speeds up to 62 mph in 4 wheel high.
Driving on a straight stretch in high should not due any damage .

There are a lot of people in southern Cal that buy them to have them. Then when they do take them offroad they think they are Ivan Stewart and beat the crap out of it. For those in So Cal that use there trucks offroad 4X4 or 2WD (DEZ) you know who you are know what I mean

uhmm.... I guess it takes all kinds. If you live where you depend on your 4 wheel drive working, you tend not to treat them so badly. I guess that is why they drive the Toyota and pull the Ford Sorry... it just slipped

So I read both. That you cannot exceed 62 mph in 4x4 hi and that you can exceed 62 but just not shift into 4x4 at a speed above 62......so which is it. All the 4x4's I have owned could drive at any speed in 4x4 hi. Had my Ram at 70+ and my Silverado the same. I have a good friend who lives in the upper peninsula of MI, just on the border with Canada and everyone up there drives at high 4x4 speeds. So, who has the answer. If I cannot exceed 62 mph in 4x4 this might change my mind on purchasing a Tundra.

you can drive faster than 62mph in 4x4 mode, just cant switch to 4x4 while driving faster than 62mph.

i dont see why youd want to drive faster than 62mph in conditions requiring 4x4 anyway, but thats your call.

I know is sounds ubsurd but when you get a snow packed highway or interstate you can really run at a high speed and do it safely. Ice is different, you gotta go slow. I would not recommend it to everyone but I drive everyday as part of my work which includes driving in bad weather. But a snow packed road is the only time I would travel at a high speed in 4x4. In areas of the US where it snows alot, people run regularly at high speeds in the snow.
