4x4 damage when turning on dry pavement -- I need to engage 4wd to pull the trailer out of my backyard during the wet season (yes we have one, just very short). A few times I was in 4wd before getting the truck straight, and turned on the pavement. Heard some tire scrubbing (just a bit). I'm not too worried about it, because it was slow speed and only done a few times. Now, I make sure I've already got the truck straightened out before tapping 4wd.... I've used 4wd a lot offroad, since this and everything seems good!

Check out Toyotaiguide.com
I understand the speed (62mph) and when to use four wheel drive...my questions deals with the following:
The section under "four wheel drive" video says "drive your truck in four wheel drive at least 10 miles a month. www.toyotaiguide.com the video that states that you should drive 10 miles a month is under "Automatic Disconnecting Differential" I sweat that I am not making this up!!! Thanks...this site is great! |

I used my 4WD 2 times since I've had my 08 Tundra.
1. Got my ATV stuck (yeah they get stuck) and decided I would try and recover it by pulling my Tundra up close enough to attach the winch cable from my ATV to my tundra. This was in a foot and a half of snow with street tires. 2. Pulled out a tree stump. Worked great, and didn't even spin a tire. Much, much better than my old 3/4 ton Ford truck. I listened to the video on the Toyotaguide website and it does say to drive in 4WD for 10 miles each month. However, I've never done that on any of my previous 4WD's and never had a problem. The biggest problem is remembering to do so. I'm sure that it said the same thing for my Ford truck, my nissan pickup, and my mazda, but I never had any trouble out of them so I don't really think it matters.

You can drive faster than 62 while in 4WD. It's just that you can't switch back to 2WD if you are going over 62mph. You just get a beeping noise if you try it.

That is a good question. When they were talking about the Super Charger, and how they put it in 4wd to get better acceleration, is that really a good idea. I can't imagine that being something that would help the truck. I know I am wrong....this is just because I am curious, so no one jump on me....but I thought 4 wd would slow you down, not make you go faster. Can some one explain?

More wheels turning means more traction. So it will help you take off from a dead stop. But you could destroy your transfer case from driveline windup caused from using part-time 4WD on high traction surfaces. Look around the net and you can find pictures from people who have done it on other vehicles. Haven't seen any from the Tundra yet. Driveline windup is also called axle bind or drive line bind if you want to search for more information on it. It can also happen from driving long distance in 4WD without a center differential.
The image below is the transfer case of a Jeep Grand Cherokee after accidentally driving about for 150 miles in part time 4WD on the freeway. It exploded at about 70 mph.

Well I do what the manual says and drive about 10-15 miles a month in 4wd. I have a few stretches of road that are straight and long (about 5 miles one way) and when it rains I put it in 4wd and drive about 40 mph. Keeps everything lubricated and in proper working order.
